Zapp
Folks I have recently taken on a .243 and am wondering where people in the Northants/Beds/Cambs area get their CF ammunition from. I'm primarily interested in PPU, Remington or Federal factory rounds as I dont have the time or inclination to homeload. What I need to know is who is reliable and reasonably priced? Many thanks! Zapp
They both look worth a look, cheers chaps. I'd really like to give a box of PPU a try, but I cant get hold of Peter Lawman, nor can I find anyone else round here who does it.
Andy H
Yes P L has been a little elusive as of late.
al4x
Stuteleys on the A1 have been better recently zapp and may be worth a call. Prices do seem lower as well, if you ever wanted to try some reloads I'm not miles away and with everything to reload for .243 doesn't take long to knock up 100 if there are 2 of you and you have a load that works in your gun
wildtrax
steve at stuteleys is helpful and they have a good stock of .243 and keep federals in stock.
Dunkield
Now an enterprising RFD would do 'tester packs' of 20 cartridges, made up of 4 x 5 cartridges from different manufacturers. You test them out, find the one that works best in you rifle and go back and order a load. You don't really want to buy 20, realise after the first 3 it was waste of time and then shoot off the other 17 just to get rid of them. I think I might write to Dragons Den.. steve_b_wales
PPU ammunition, in my opinion is good stuff. I have used it in my 22-250,.243 & .308 with no issues. It's not match grade ammo' but is good enough for foxes and deer.
Zapp
Cheers guys, I'll have a look at Stuteleys site now. Dunkield, you are spot on, I really dont want to spend a load of cash on 20 round I will know I cant use after 3. Steve, I'm holding out hope that my rifle will like PPU, simply because it is half the price of everything else. Al4x, I may well take you up on that offer in the future. The problem is that I dont yet have a load that I know suits my rifle.
al4x
simple answer to that zapp might well be to try something average shall we say so length as set out in the manual full length sized and with an average powder load and see how it shoots. You can go to the lengths of the earth as laid out by some on here but I'd almost lay money on being able to better privi with a couple of pet loads I have. Depending what you want to shoot but i have a 75grn vmax recipe that is pretty mild yet shoots tiny groups and an 85 grn soft point load that is similar. Both in book spec lengths and full length re sized so would be possible to try but the main thing you need is some brass which really means using some factory first or finding some. If you are ever down the A1 I'm 2 minutes off the stevenage north junction and could let you have a few to try.
Zapp
Would it all need to be one type of brass? I have a fair amount but it is a mix of Remington and Federal. I've sent you a PM.

I get about 1" with it all and as the vast majority of my quarry is under 200 yards thats plenty good enough for me. It must always be said though, BARRELS, pal of mine could only get about 4" groups out of his Rem700 .308 yet my Rem700.308 was delivery 1" from the same ammo at the same time!
