THE GRIFF
I have posted this in the wildfowling section rather than the clothing section as it will be the wildfowlers than can probably relate to what I am asking. I prefer to wear thigh waders rather than chest waders when out shooting and just wondered what trousers people are wearing with waders. I have a pair of waterproof trousers I have been wearing most of the season that are very breathable and comfy with waders but the zip has just gone in them, not sure what make they are but will be getting them repaired. I also have some harkila pro hunter trousers that I had on this evening but find them very uncomfortable with waders especially when nieling down, they crease up at the back of the knees and are too thick around the wellie part of the waders and are uncomfortable. Standard army issue combat trousers are comfy when its dry but not waterproof and you end up with a wet backside if the weathers bad. In an ideal world if you could get a pair of trousers that was waterproof and thicker material from your thighs upwards and a none waterproof, comfortable, breathable thinner material from the thighs down then they would be perfect, but as far as I am aware there isn't such a thing. I will get the ones repaired I already have but could do with another pair anyway, what waterproof trousers have you found comfy with waders and what would you recomend? Big Mat
I usually wear a pair of combats with some stormkloth trousers that i got off ebay over the top. They are meant to be waterproof, but as i've found out many times they are not! The Cabelas one are meant to be good, i've got a jacket from them and it is excellent! TJ91
On the odd occasion I wear my neoprene thigh wads I wear thick shorts and a pair of wax leggings, that way my bum stays dry wen I sit and my upper leg is kept warm by the shorts but nothing too thick that rolls up behind my knees Be warned though, when you jump out of your motor at the estuary car park in the middle of winterwearing shorts, you do get some looks! TJ91
On a side note.. would you better off buying waist height waders? I find them much comfier and better if sitting on wet surface

ayano3
I use thigh boots with ordinary trousers under them and have a pair of chest waders that are cut off above the knee for slipping on once out in the mud. You can carry the remains of the chest waders in a bag and wear the thigh boots down on warmer days. Perfect. :-)

At my age that's quite often. I wear thigh waders over track-suit trousers with a pair of waterproof trousers cut off at the knee (shorts) over the top. Works well. It's what everyone did back in the 'good old days'.
mudpatten
Got to agree with Grandalf. The standard "uniform" before chest waders became fashionable was exactly as he describes. I too much prefer to wear thigh waders unless expecting really bad mud or deep water/ I wear fleecy track suit trousers with a pair of "Dickies" workwear waterproof overtrousers on top which cost about £15 and have been excellent value for money. I will eventually get around to cutting them off at the knee and wearing them over the boots but I`ve found that the amount of rain water that runs down into the boot, unless it is absolutely torrential, is very small, especially with a longish top coat. The only reason I have sworn off neoprene over-trousers is because I was given them. Its usually some of those cheap green Sunday Market waterproofs sworn off's I think the only things I have ditched since I started fowling is the cartridge belt (I just carry those in my pockets) and my wax jackets. I forgot the long-johns - they are a must. Silk are the best... The over 'shorts' that I use have a history. Back in 1967 I was an impoverished just ex squaddie. My cousin was a sub-mariner. My fowling gear was therefore white polonecked jerseys and plastic looking 'destroyer deck trousers'. (That's what it says on the label). They have attached braces. I cut them off at the knees and am still wearing the same ones today - Now that is service. Edited December 30, 2012 by Grandalf
mudpatten
White polo neck submariners jersey! Have`nt seen anyone wearing one of those for a good few years. Another long since vanished part of the old longshoremans uniform along with the Barbour Solway zipper, Hood Bullseye thigh boots and Millarmitts. IEH
Another long since vanished part of the old longshoremans uniform along with the Barbour Solway zipper, Hood Bullseye thigh boots and Millarmitts. I'm still using Millarmitts as I can't find anything better, also still using the old off-white seaboot stockings! Luddite, me?
Grandalf
And I thought I was the only oldun on this site... Memsahib's tights make good non chaffing longjohns too. She does get so annoyed when I ask her to 'get em off' before I go fowling - Nicer when they are pre-warmed!
fandango
I wear thigh waders, with combats under under them, I then have a pair of cheap water proof trousers which are cut of at just above the knee these are worn over the thigh waders, this means no rain will run down the top of the waders,,, bit more flexible than waist waders and is more comfortable when walking long distances,, also you have some something waterproof to sit on.
