Cardboard pigeon decoys

Recommended Posts

years ago I used to shoot over cardboard decoys, they came in a pack of ten, photo printed, you just folded them around , clipped them together and mounted them on a split peg, they were light, cheap and very effective, but i cant find them anywhere now, anyone know if they are still available and where, ive got shells but they take up too much room , need to lighten my load.

They were great, I used to carry 50 in a small backpack and wacked loads of pigeons just using them as decoys, in those days we didnt have floaters , rotorys or anything else, we didnt have the internet either so advice was hard to come by, just trial and error and lots of cartridges.

Just had a look on ebay at the FUD's but they are not the same thing and a bit pricey as well, the ones I used were just a flat piece of card which was waterproof, you rolled it into a tube which looked just like a shell decoy when fixed. might try making some.

I do remember them but I always had plastic half shells & full bodied. In the late 80's a mate of mine had some very /very light half shells made of abs by an outfit called "Fife shooting developments". They used to advertise in the shooting times. Up close they looked cheap and totally unrealistic, BUT when they were out in a pattern in the field they looked really realistic. His decoys pulled much better than my deeks which looked as good as a natural bird in it's colours. I dont think they have been around for years. if they were still available I'd buy about fifty of them because they were so lightweight that they used to break especially when you took one just about to land in the pattern and the odd deek caught a stray pellet out on the edge.

You'll have a hard job. Fife shooting developments wet down the pan years ago as far as I know.

I am sure they did, I remember those decoys which were very light the only problem being they were inclined to blow away on a windy day. Until a couple of years ago I had One of "Fife Developments" game bags, the de-luxe model with a large seperate comparment in front which held a sandwich box and flask no bother, the game bag itself would hold over 20 pigeons.

I do not think that the decoys referred to by Lakeside are those currently advertized on e-Bay ( as advised by Blasterian and through many other outlets through Google).I believe Lakesides were flat, then folded over ie virtually 3D whilst the latter ones are simply silhouettes.

A bird approaching low would see these sils if they were sideways on,but from on high or from the front or rear I doubt they would be noticed

.Any indication of what these sils are made of or how durable they are ? How are they pegged ?

Whilst FUDS are virtually silhouettes they are relatively substantial and have the facility to vary their stance and the substantial peg enables them to withstand a wind.

I got 6 of these from my dad when I started shooting the ticket in the box says "as recommended by the shooting times" had them out a few times mixed in with some half shells, they "nod" on the pegs and give a bit of movement, very light weight, very compact if you find where to buy some let me know. Even lighter and more compact than fuds
