aris
I would have thought that if you use an electric heater with a thermostat and a timer, it would be cheaper.
shaun4860
I remember in 1972 it was 10p per gallon...

four-wheel-drive
back in the 60s there was a place near to us that had a machine you put your can at the bottom of it and put a tube in to your can and then put ether a 2/- or it may have been half a crown the machine would buzz and your can would be filled up all that I can say is thank god for central heating god our bath room was cold. I think what you need is a conservatory on the back of the house then you could just have an extra radiator to keep it worm move the plants out in spring and you can sit in the sun until the summer comes and it will be to hot problem solved. Dougy
Could you use a little log burner. Ok it will Need a little modification to the greenhouse but could be a saving long term.
ferguson_tom
I buy 80l every couple of months for testing stuff at work, our local hardware shop has a tank and tap on the wall- its the only place i have seen for years. Considering i am buying quite a lot and they have a tank its still £1.50 a ltr. Speaking to the owner of the hardware shop he has found it harder and harder to get with only one fuel company supplying it.

cosmo
I think it is the same as Kerosene as used in central heating boilers
39TDS
I think it is the same as Kerosene as used in central heating boilers Greenhouse stuff has less sulphur. The full rate sulphur would kill your plants. Then again, maybe household stuff is low sulphur now. I doubt it is so make sure before you use it. TaxiDriver
Have you tried the sort of firms that sell fuel oil ? Im sure I paid something like 24p a litre buying 25litres at a time, think there was also a different grade that was couple of pence per litre dearer. aris
I'm wondering how paraffin can cost more than petrol when there is no road fuel duty on paraffin.
LondonLuke
I'm wondering how paraffin can cost more than petrol when there is no road fuel duty on paraffin. Less demand so not as widely produced thus more specialist and expensive
aris
Less demand so not as widely produced thus more specialist and expensive That sounds like a poor excuse to me. More than half the price of petrol is RFD and VAT. I dont think there is any tax on paraffin, except maybe vat.

Agreed, but when an item (petrol) is produced and demanded in millions of litres the price will always be less than something less in demand (paraffin). There are also less stockists of paraffin so less of a drive to sell it at a lower price. Its just economies of scale meeting competitive pricing (or lack thereof)
Gav912
Always use kerosene out of the central heating tank in my greenhouse heaters with no ill effects on the plants in there, much cheaper than buying cans from anywhere. four-wheel-drive
If it gives off carbon dioxide its poison to us but plants love it I think.

MM
If it gives off carbon dioxide its poison to us but plants love it I think. if i remember right, plants take in carbon dioxide in the day time, and give out oxygen, but its reverses at night, they take IN O2, and give out Co2. Thats why they used to remove the plants from hospital wards at night.
aris
If it s a fossil fuel, I would have thought it would give out carbon MONOXIDE.
owdnorthener
Hi, You could run a copper pipe around the greenhouse and have it connected to a home made solar panel. Made, using an old radiator fitted into an insulated box, with it painted black to catch the sun light. I will look out the details if you fancy giving it a go. Must be worth a try ....
