Mr pigeon
Hi guys going out at the weekend and hide is in middle of the field. Birds approaching left right and centre but not from behind. I know it's wind dependent but do any of u guys use a certain pattern? Do u surround the hide so to speak or just in front or what? I have 30 decoys 3 flappers a whirlybird and 4 bouncers at my disposal. What do u guys reckon? Cheers in advance!
aga man
hi mate there is a pinned section at the top of the pigeon shooting tips page that might help.
TIGHTCHOKE
I use two long comma shaped groups of decoys with a gap up wind as the killing zone. Then flappers and a rotary to add movement to the pattern. Try to get the wind on your back so that they come in towards you. Good luck
Mr pigeon
Cheers aga man yes I did see that thanks. I do a lot of decoying from the edge of a field but was just wondering if much changes for people if there in the middle of a field. Cheers again though. motty
Just use the decoy pattern that you would normally use.
lakeside1000
If im out in the field with no cover I like to set the pattern slightly offset to the hide so that as the pigeons approach the kill zone they are not looking directly at the hide, this also works to your advantage as the pigeons coming in to the wind over the decoys will be moving left to right or right to left depending which side you set up the hide, I always prefer left to right rather than having them come head on, just my thing, try different set ups and see what works for you. Same for me - I think I dont like "head on" approaches either as its difficult to read the speed and angle of the approaching bird.

TIGHTCHOKE
Yes the ROTARY is what I use to get their attention, a correctly built and camouflaged hide hasn't caused any problems for me over the years!

Mr pigeon
Hi apv can't see in the pinned section anywhere a decoy pattern for the middle of a field? Cheers
motty
Hi apv can't see in the pinned section anywhere a decoy pattern for the middle of a field? Cheers Seriously, you don't need to change your decoy pattern to shoot in the middle of a field. Your usual set up should be just fine. And don't make special allowances for your hide - if built correctly, pigeons will take no notice of it. yickdaz
i would listen to what motty is telling you, and i have the same opinion they will decoy to the same setup you would have on a hedgeline base of a tree, face of a wood etc etc its about having the confidence to do it thats all it is
