Fib new
Whatever people tell you about freelanders, they are not that bad -especially the diesel ones. But if you're going for mpg and don't need the extra space I would go for the jimny.
cockercas
I have a jimny, currently using it as a boat as everything is under water. 10mpg with muds on tho. Edited February 24, 2013 by cockercas

al4x
Diesel Suzuki vitara is what you need beat the freelander hands down in regards to value for money and economy will be better than the jimney
Bloke
Just picked up a Nissan XTrail in 2.0 diesel automatic and it is doing 36 mpg on combined (but mainly 10-mile) runs, so the manual box model should give you about 40mpg, at least. That is serious - 10mpg !
Fib new
I hope 10mpg for a jimny is not serious! My old '72 series III 6cyl petrol does 16mpg and I thought that was generous:-).

bodach
Diesel Suzuki vitara is what you need beat the freelander hands down in regards to value for money and economy will be better than the jimney Had mine till last week, 45k service £950 gulp, why the change the belts & pulleys at 45k beats me 08 reg so got rid of vitara and bought a Jimny for the wife to use as roun-a-round and I will use it at weekends. Get rid of MX5 (wife not too keen on the motorways in it) and the Ranger. Then either get another Jag to keep SWMBO happy plus a mule to be kept on the farm or just a smaller 4by4 for all purposes. Having had 2 some time back am looking at the X Trail. And, until I Saw bodach's post, the Vitara. Does that apply to all models? As always, you will probably lose money in the deal. How long will it take to make that back with the better fuel economy with whatever you go for? Worth a thought as you obviously enjoy the Frontera
luckytrigger
I run a 13yr old td4 freelander and really like it . vIts ery good on my shoots fitted with insa Dakar muds. I ran it without the front prop shaft in the summer putting it in 2wd and got a good 440 miles out of a full tank of diesel. In 4wd running mud tires in getting 330 miles a tank. I only use the 'Freebie' for shooting and cover around 4,000 miles a year.

wymberley
Yep, that'll sort out your fuel consumption costs - in fact it'll eliminate them completely as you won't be able to afford to go anywhere!

Elby
I think I have owned most 4x4's Recently I pensioned my Mitsi off to the farm as a beaters wagon and bought a Honda CRV The car has done nothing but surprise me, goes all the places and more that all my others have been and is brilliant on fuel. Also if you get a pre 2001 model it has the big sunroof in for lamping
blade
Right lads had a look at a few jimneys some good some complete rot boxes under rear seats and boot well .And also i think space wise with a dog gear and hopefully 100 pigeons in back would be tight. So think i might steer away from that option.Been looking at the xtrail 2.2 diesel any opinions please from owners .Looked at reviews online but most people slated them for blown turbos and intercoolers and other mechanical issues .So any unbiased opions please also what mpg would i be looking at cheers. Also another one to throw in the mix found one of these in price range toyota rav4 2.0 d-4d gx 5 door so which one do you recommend ?
