welshwarrior
I'm looking to adjust my rifle selection and I'm at a loss. I will keep my 22lr but what 1 other rifle should I get for deer, wild boar and fox. I'm thinking 308 or 270 but what does PW recon and why. jay222
I've got .223, .308 and 7mm rem mag if I wanted just one for fox deer and boar I'd stick with just the 7mm. But I'm sure the .308 would work well as an all rounder too

al4x
Not the best fox gun but if you don't shoot many then you may be ok
welshwarrior
Not the best fox gun but if you don't shoot many then you may be ok I'm not looking for a rifle that will be best for all tasks as they are so different, but I want a good jack of all trades. PW keep the ideas coming.
Dekers
You can't get a good jack of all trades rifle from Fox to Boar! .308 is definitely not my fox rifle and I don't remember ever taking it out specifically for fox, but you have minimum legal requirements for deer, and I favour a little more for Boar. I just don't see it, but as I've never been a fan of .270, then on your options .308. Edited April 22, 2013 by Dekers
welshwarrior
Dekers I shoot very few foxes but sometimes a keeper asks for help. I'm not limited to 270 or 308 they where my thoughts willing to consider anything else if someone put up a good calibre with a good set of pros. You simply have to start at the top and work down...how many Boar do you shoot, frankly that is pretty much the only reason I have a .308 (and target). I am easy with ALL deer with my .243 in the vast majority of situations, so, what is the minimum you are easy to shoot Boar with? Lots of ammo types and weights available for .270 and .308 depending what the barrel will deal with, (I've heard but never used them, that the LIGHT Barnes Ballistic tips in 270 or .308 are useful) so you may be able to use a lighter ballistic tip for the fox, but you can't shoot Boar with a Pop Gun, you must be confident it can do the job! al4x
Its an interesting one, my main issue with the 308 would be trajectory for foxing at any real range but if its only problem foxes then Dekers may have the answer, the other thing is the traditional soft point relatively slow bullet from a 308 doesn't break up that well which is perfect on deer but not perfect on foxes especially if you are using them at night. The .270 is definitely less loopy and has a lot of fans as ever it may come down to what you can get if you are going straight from a .22lr
welshwarrior
I'm confident with the 308 out to long range but never tried a 270. I'm not going 22lr straight. I've had or have in the past 22 hornet 17 HMR 223 222 243 25/06 308 30-06 and 375 and currently use a 338 lapua for targets (it's a little much for rabbits!!!) Dekers
Whilst quite a capable round the .338 Lap Mag would be considered a bit much and far from first choice for a lot of target work as well. Ok, you can never get a real picture of the situation on a forum but obvious questions come to mind, such as, what do you think with that experience and why not have/use 2 centrefires? welshwarrior
338 is to much for pretty much everything I feel in love with it in the Army and had to buy one. Change of job young son now limits my shooting time so my wife is happy for me to stay on my shotguns their my real passion but the rifles have had to be liquidated especially some expensive glass. I wanted your feel as in the past I have had a selection. I shoot boar 4-5 times a year and stalk about the same, so do I get a 243 and go back to 12 bore slug for boar, not sure I'm happy with that but needs must. Dougy
Have you thought of a 6.5 x

njc110381
Have you thought of a 6.5 x 55 Too small apparently. The police like to see a minimum of .270, even though I know a couple of people who will tell you the 6.5 is plenty. I think I'd go for a 7-08 or 7x57. The 7mm offers a better trajectory with lighter bullets than the .308 but still has enough punch for boar. Finding one gun for all of them isn't too hard. Finding one bullet on the other hand... Are you going to be shooting two different loads through it?

Underdog
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.284_Winchester The common 7mm cartridges are actually using a larger bullet than 7mm(of which .284 is). 270win is actually a true 7mm.
