I am trying to remove the egr valve from a 300tdi discovery but can't get the Allen bolts to loosen at all any tips tried wd40 and a ratchet Allen key but it just flexes and doesn't turn at all want to avoid snapping the bolts any ideas

which type do you have, some have two allen bolts onto the exhaust manifold and a further two bolts on a flange into the inlet pipe, just as easy to blank it at the inlet pipe where the bolts undo easy

to undo the allen bolts on the manifold first try giving them a shrap knock square on with a hammer,if that fails then go for heat, tool wise best to use an allen socket on an extension bar rather than a traditional L shaped allen key

Which ones are you having problems with?

If its the manifold ones I left mine well alone as I didn't want to risk snapping them, so I blanked mine off after the heat exchanger. The valve side came off pretty easily using a ratchet.

Mine are the two Allen bolts on the manifold and then a bit further along the pipe I have the valve with like another bit same shape as the blanking plate with 2 I think 10mm bolts holding it I have managed to loosen these with a ratchet is it ok to just blank it off there if I can't get the Allen bolts undone will try with heat etc then if still no joy will blank it off further along the pipe

A Impact Driver will loosen any rusted screws or bolts in a jiffy. Brilliant tool. :good:

Machine Mart do two of them one at £10 and one at £15 more bits with it. :good:

It`s a tool you should only buy once unless you lend it to a mate that never brings it back.

And i can`t remember who the hell borrowed it.

This is my third one and I don`t lend tools out anymore. :sad1:

impact driver sounds like an option will be handy to have one as no doubt it will be needed more than once dont have a machine mart nearby but i am sure i will find one somewhere will start having a look cheers

correct me if I'm wrong as I don't know the tdi but with the manifolds being cast and bolted to the head the last thing I would do would start hitting an impact driver with a hammer against it. Some places they are ideal but onto cast I'm not so sure its a good idea

Agreed. I wouldn't fancy using an impact driver on it, especially an allen bolt as rounding it off would be too easy.

I am not saying hit the impact driver with a 2 lb lump hammer.

Use a rubber mallet to give it a slight shock and twist to free it. :good:

The casting is plenty strong enough to stand a light shock.

Using some heat from a blow lamp wouldn`t go a miss.

And putting some penetrating fluid on them for a few days will help. :good:

If you have access to a 1/2 drive Air gun or 3/8 drive gun would be ideal.
