English archer
Something has upset my wife's pet rabbit. He has been thumping for the last 2 nights, and today i found this damage to the rear gate which is 4 foot from his hutch. He is used to our dog, cats, and all the local cats, so don't think its those. The damage starts 2 inch from the ground, to around 2 foot high. I may be wrong but that looks like small claw marks in the woodwork all the way next to the long worn areas, that is a cat jumping at the fence and pulling itself to the top. Just like on MY fencepost where all the neighbours cats come into my garden. The rough area to the left is indicative of their behaviour as well. English archer
Would the smell of a strange cat be enough to upset a rabbit? Fox or badger. Is there access for either? Check for hole's around property. Plenty of access, and we are surrounded by countryside.
Bluebarrels
Looks like cat scratchings to me but most cats would just jump the fence BB Edited May 24, 2013 by Bluebarrels

delburt0
Can't see a fox scratching more likely to jump over , as cats , can't see a billie been that close to the houses and It wouldn't been bothered about a rabbit anyway , sticking my neck out but it looks like cat scrats but I would have thought it would have jumped up the fence maybe there might be other interests to a cat like a new rat on the block

Imperfection
My parents once had a cat which would stretch itself to scratch quite high up a particular fence post and the claw marks look identical.
English archer
Just been out, and looked around the garden, and found signs of something coming under the fence behind the shed, around 2 foot away from the damage. From the rear of the fence.Only rabbit droppings on the garden, but Thumper runs free for an hour a day, could it be wild rabbits trying to mate, would they be interested in a 13.2lb french lop?Time to get the air rifles out? fenboy
Almost certainly a cat making those marks so I would hold off on the airgun Before My cats became road kill they used to claw the post that holds my bird feeders and it is amazing how much damage they can do in a few mins while sharpening their claws. JKD
Looks like a cat or cats have been using your gate post as a scratching-post. All felines do this to keep their claws in good condition. HTH
Grandalf
Soak the earth - hose pipe - around the hole in the fence. Footprints will decide the mystery.
