unapalomablanca
Everything starts from nothing, you could kick off by opening it up to various shooting / fishing forum users to flog and buy their wares. Ebay will one day have to face a competitor, I almost never bid on anything there but merely look up what I want to buy (not fancy) and compare with Amazon and the latter is often better / cheaper. Ebay selling charges are pretty criminal for what they do so at least you have an angle of attack ! 10per cent aint criminal. You go to an auction house and they take 15 both ways plus vat. Also i wonder how many showcase their wares and do an off ebay deal and pay nothing. I actually think they are great, but i am always open to other auction sites. Mungler
Oh, and call this market research http://theherbivorehippi.hubpages.com/hub/hhippiestoptenagainstebay I still can't believe no one else has thought of an alternative to counter the injustices of eBay Edit I can't believe there's so many eBay haters on here and yet who don't take advantage of these eBay alternative sites. You see what I did there? Yeah, I know, point well made, and you're welcome. Edited June 13, 2013 by Mungler
955i
Oh would you take a breath and listen to yourself. My clients come to me for advice, they pay £250/ hour plus vat, they listen and then they choose what they want to do and instruct me. You're not even paying let alone listening Tell you what you want to hear - it's a cracking idea, I can't believe anyone else hasn't thought of it, so don't waste another minute - mortgage your kidneys and get yourself on Dragons Den and this time next year you'll be a zillionaire. My clients also pay £200+ an hour for my advice. What is your point? Is it that its not viable (which it is) or that you don't like it? Mungler
Seriously, lets not fall out. You've got longevity on here and I'm not picking a row. You have asked for opinions and views. I fear you will waste your time, energy and money. I've said my bit. If I thought it was a runner I would say. Good luck whatever you decide to do. Nial
Hi all, looking into setting up an alternative to that site. Software is in place and site won't take classifieds. Would anyone be interested in using it or won't bother What do you have to lose apart from some time and effort? Will you always regret it if you don't give it a go? About 4 years ago I had an idea I talked over with a web/back end development guy about a web app to allow captains who organise sporting teams every week to make their job a lot easier. We went through periods of excitement them long periods of inaction, I've had paying contracts I've been working on as has he so the whole thing stagnated. There could have been massive payback with very targeted advertising (if you knew what each team was playing). A week or two ago I heard about.... http://teamer.net/ It's too late now. In 20 years ebay probably won't be the dominant auction/ trading site. Good luck. Nial.

I am looking at a UK only site that will be based on the reasons bay started

Cranfield
Ebid has existed for some time as a direct competitor to eBay, but with the emphasis on auctions and not just a market stall concept. They have hardly dented eBay's dominance. The money at the moment seems to be in inventing/developing Apps and then selling the concept to the highest bidder. Thunderbird
I'm tempted to try and think of a new concept app that will combine this with bee-keeping and door repairs.

No doubt, but could this advice be why it hasn't been done already? Not that it can't be done, just a lot to take on

Surely that would only work in Burnley where I believe there is a shortage of doors at the moment.

brynhaller
I've just launched a new range of boxers, they have a Velcro strip in the bottom about 2inch wide what you can rip out and replace once stained.saves on washing powder, embarrassing moments when you pull, and comes in a pack of five each with 5 replaceable strips so nearly a years supply then! Any orders?
maxus77
possible but would take mega amounts of cash and time to get even 1% of ebay sales and im sure people would rather use any decent rival over ebay i would say who handles payments and costs associated to adverts etc how would you handle legality of items being sold and person / company registration to help aid fradulent sellers / buyers dodgy seller policy dodgy buyer policy fair feedback system how to attract users if you have some good answers to those then im in, you can have my sale n purchases Edited June 13, 2013 by maxus77
RED BEARD
i'd say if you want to start an auction site that does what ebay doesn't,you need a gun/gun stuff auction site as ebay won't sell firearms and even pull listing for barrels and mods.there might be one already, but i've not found one as yet. Oli
sounds like you need to spend a lot of money to me, have you got a design for ux, s/ware and platform to work out if its worth it? Delivering a site is one thing, but delivering one that can scale, compete, be responsive, look professional etc. is an entirely different mater doing all those things costs a lot and if you dont it will just get brushed over. Hamster
Of all the mega sites we all know and use, to me Ebay seems the most dated and least easy to navigate especially for e-mail retrieval. They seem to never change or improve the format !?
lksopener
You may be on to a real winner but it wouldn't be something personally I would invest in. eBay has a massive market lead and also huge amount of buyer/seller traffic. Factor in to that advertising power etc etc and I don't think you stand a chance. That seems to be the consensus in here, sure we are no buisness genius' but advice is advice all the same. You don't seem to be open to constructive criticism?
