darebear
hmmmm i was sitting here and thinking about all of this stuff. when will it stop? when christmas day, boxing day, and easter bank holidays are removed for the sake of not offending others? pfffffft. bloody hope not. but it makes you wonder, eh? Cranfield
I think you will find most of the decisions not to put up decorations and lights in offices, is more to do with Health and Safety , than any anti religious feelings. Graham M
Once worked at a place where an elderly Pakistani used to put his prayer mat in the corner of the shop and pray every dinner time. He then used to go into the washroom and stand with his one foot on the floor whilst he washed the other one in the sink. Can you imagine the H&S people telling him to stop this practice in case he slipped and fell? No Cranfield this isn’t anything to do with H&S but more to do with using H&S law to stop us from doing what may offend Muslims. G.M. I can't comment on your elderly Pakistani's ablution habits, but I can assure you that 30 years ago my Employer (major Oil Company) stopped anyone putting up coloured lights at Christmas, due to the fire risks and all paper chains etc were put up by the Maintenance Dept using ladders etc. The assumption being they knew what they were doing. The comforting fact in reading all these discussions on protecting our religion, is that the churches must be full every Sunday. Strangely, ours isn't. pin
This is such nonsense. This is US doing this, its nothing to do with Muslims or anyone else. WE decided to NOT put these up in case WE offended someone. Ask any Muslim, or any non christian for that matter, they couldn't give a **** about xmas decorations, they don't observe the same holiday and generally couldn't care less. Its one thing if minority groups claim discrimination for non-discriminatory practices. Its quite something else when we discriminate against ourselves, just makes us look stupid. jonno 357
Not having a bit of poxy tinsel up at work and not hanging up some xmas card from a work college who you think is a t$sser anyway. WOW big deal I suppose we are all God fearing Christians who spend every Sunday in church praising the Lord ? I think not. What we should be allowing is Tatty Singh and his brothers to also celebrate their xmas at work also if we are going to be so PC What do ya reckon Jonno
Guest jonrms
jonno, The beard thing... some religions... (sorry cant say because I cant remember) keep there long beards ..... as a show of there maturity... and when in the health service.. one gentleman.. was asked to remove his... he refused on religious grounds... anyway before it was even made to court.. the nhs backed off and allowed him to keep it.. and not to be clean shaven! I hope that helps.
pin
Christmas as a religious festival has nothing to do with santa, xmas trees, tinsel, presents or sodding cliff richard singles. A long time ago we mixed up the Mid-Winter Pagan Tree Festivals with the concept of the Christian festival of Advent which is all about Christ's birth. From the concept of a special mass to celebrate Christ's birth, a bastardisation produced "Christmas" which when you think about is missing an "s". Anyone who moans about not being able to put up xmas decorations on religious grounds wants shooting.

il cacciatore
There is a surprising lack of people putting up Christmas decorations this year in their own homes. The town council has got the tree up and all the decorations: they aren't holding back encase they offend someone which is surprising as they are a labour council. Think people are getting slightly tired of the commercialisation now.
pin
Same where I work, we are close to some council offices and they are putting up a huge xmas tree and lights etc. The vast majority of the workers there are at a guess of the Muslim faith (traditional dress etc). Just as it should be, live and let live.

Big debate on the radio up our's yesterday about this, one of the main conculsions was;;; Some firms were using it as an excuse not to put any Xmas Decor up because they are as tight as a Frogs Ar seh ole, ( Water Tight ) All the Turbin bashers that phoned in didn't seem to be bothered about it, big hype in the papers, in fact all of them were looking forward to the Xmas...............!!! Not for me to agree with them, there religion boils my p i s s, but to be fair, I have to this time..... BJ.
pin
I am sure Muslim/Jewish/other non-christians are happy with xmas this year, we all stop working mid-week this year and since offices will be closed they get a few days extra holiday for nowt. darebear
well..... i'm anti-religion as i have said before. somewhere between athiest and agnostic. however, i certainly dont mind all the holidays and partying associated with christmas, the sparkly lights etc etc, andddddddddd the whole commercialism bit of giving and receiving presents . i agree to an extent with pin about the british culture looking stupid because we discriminate against ourselves. and as he said, it's this country all over. i'm just waiting for the next stupid installment of whatever ridiculous ban this country comes up with next, which in turn will cause yet another barrage of moaning and whining. blahhhhhhhhh. In fact I'll shortly be suing my local Police Dept. for their tardiness in issuing my Firearms license - contrary to my Constitutional Rights..... Try that with your local FEO....... Gully
For what its worth, I work in the clothing trade and spend most of December driving around the country delivering Christmas presents ( a botttle of Scotch or two) to my mostly Muslim customers. I don't get any refusals. I did panic however when my staff decided they wanted to go Ice Skating last year for their Xmas 'do'. Fortunatley HSBC booked out the whole of the skating rink in Canary Wharf on the night we'd booked and they had to cancel our booking. I really didn't want to pay for someone's broken leg that they'd done on the staff Xmas outing. Sad.
Mil-Dot
Realistically Christmas has nothing to do with Religion anymore, Its just about having something to look forward to during the long horrible winter.
njc110381
I don't much like christmas myself. You may call me miserable, but I don't believe it's right. If you are a christian, who believes in all this god stuff, then fine. I don't go to church unless I have to for a wedding etc, so why should I make a big fuss on the 25th? I go along with it in the background because all my family are into it, but only as much as I have to! As for taming it for other religions, it is the british digging their own hole to jump in. I'm not bothered if the indian (or whatever else he may be) wants to pray all the time, let him carry on and just dock his wages for the time if need be. I'm sure they couldn't care less about what we do either
