Doggy Insurance

I haven't used E & L, but they were one of the Companies I have had a quote from for our new pup.

I assume you have a horror story to tell.

PetPlan are the Insurers who will never get a penny more of my money, after a problem we had with them 5 years ago.

Trying to get a recommendation on pet insurance is very difficult.

It seems that everyone has/had a gripe against one of the big name Insurers.

Any one here use E & L.

I have until recently been in a fortunate position of not having to make a claim on one of my Dogs.

Now I have and I wish I hadnt....

FM

We used to :good: .

We were messed about with, over claim.

So much that our vet put a notice up saying that he refused to deal with them anymore.

Now with the Halifax and so far so good :)

If you have grief with an insurance company keep pressing them, and advise them that you will go to the insurance ombudsman if you do not get satisfaction. I have just settled a claim with a company for my white water kayak that I damaged in the Alps this year, it took 6 months and loads of letters going through their chain of command but they folded in the end, mainly due to the fact that if the ombudsman gets involved they (not you) have to pay £370 for him to check the claim and win or lose they get a black mark against them, also if he finds for you then he imposes a payout, no excess and it can be above their maximum. If you are not happy with a company go to your local trading standards and they should be happy to help, lets face it nobody likes insurance companies.

Save a amount weekly for pet emergencies rather than handing it over to sharks :good:

LB

LB, depends on the breed and size of your dog. costs me over £100 a month for my lot and even if i pay that for the rest of their lives, it'll still be cheaper than the total in vets bills i've had during their life spans.

mind you, not everyone is daft enough to be owned by 4 newfoundlands.

and i agree with cranners about many of us having grumbles about one of the big name insurers.

i used to be with DBI until they informed me they would only pay out for an ongoing illness for up to 12 months. arghhhhhhhhh.

so i switched to petplan who agreed to cover any illness for life, i just have to pay the excess per illness per year. it's saved me a fortune.

and i have to say, i've been luckier than cranners and never had a problem with petplan.

i'd just make sure that the insurers you go with will honour paying out an illness for life, and DO NOT go with a company that only offers 12 months cover.

Darebear, They can move the goalposts at anytime. My Lurchers have hide like newspaper and after the umtenth tear I was informed that they could no longer insure such injuries. I stopped the direct debit. I am no worse off now and I am glad they no longer get any lucre form me.

Why don't you get some puddytats

Some things you have to insure to be legal (autos for one) but dogs/pets no way. Work it out...£400/500 per year, year in year out (that's what it would cost for my dogs) if they live for say 10/12 years thats somewhere between £4000 and £6000 in total. That will cover some pretty hefty vets bills. Both my current dogs have spent time at the vets (working dogs usually do don't they) but not cost that sort of money.

Same with BUPA, if you're lucky and have good health why pay £1000's a year in case you get ill. Invest the money (which after all is all the insurance companies do) and if you need it it's there or at least in part.

Animal insurance used to be a good idea, but the vets have milked it so far its wrecked it. The first question when you go into a lot of vets is is the animal insured as they just see $$$

Ours aren't insured but we do have 2 terriers and 3 cats.

We had a nasty accident a couple of years ago with both dogs and nearly lost the pair of them and that cost £250 for the hour they stayed in the vets  I'm lucky my dads a vet but 100 miles away. With their accident we took the view as it was a saturday that they weren't going to get the care they needed at our local vets and moved them to my dads. Good job too as we would definitely have lost the one had we not done so. But that saved us a fortune as I have no idea what the bill would have been otherwise.

The whole veterinary industry has lost the plot in my eyes, its now big business and very profitable and hugely expensive operations are being done to extend animals lives a bit when its probably kinder to have them put down. Owners are struggling to pay or insurers are coughing up and putting everyones premiums up.

I had a struggle to get a cat put down a while back it was 15 and had a huge mass in its stomache hadn't eaten for days etc etc and all they wanted to do was run test after test and operate. When I said do you think its a tumour they agreed it was and they wanted to see what kind it was to see about the best way to go on. I said no can you put the cat down and all I got was this odd look from the female vet like I was being cruel. The fact was it was an old cat who was dieing and I didn't want to put it through any trauma and let it go in peace, yet that was frowned on!

We've used Tesco's for a few years now and have made a claim of 250 quid with no bother whatsoever, (is that a real word?).

Having had to fork out 750 for a terrier that had it's muzzle re-constructed following an argument with something slightly bigger than himself, I wouldn't be without it now.

Highlander's right, if things are starting to look x'y I'm afraid I put them to sleep now. (I think I worked on farms for too long!)

I have taken out a "lifetime cover " policy for Bramble, with Healthy Pets Insurance, underwritten by Axa Insurance.

They seem to have a good reputation and were about average with their quote.

Whether I maintain the cover for the lifetime of the dog, remains to be seen, but I think the first year or two are the important ones.

Thanks to darebear for pointing out the "lifetime" against "one year" cover benefits, I hadn't fully realised that when browsing the various, confusing websites.
