JDog
The 'novice' is in inverted commas because this chap hardly ever goes pigeon shooting but he can shoot. This man is a long standing friend of mine who is a keen game shot, boozer, wine buff, raconteur and all round good egg. He is an educated man who amuses me greatly and I enjoy having him out with me once a year. Today was the day though at first I thought that I had chosen the wrong field but all turned out well in the end. I wanted to shoot a barley stubble but when I turned up it looked for all the world as if they had been onto it early and drilled oil seed rape and rolled it. My calls to the farm manager went unanswered and I couldn't risk driving across a newly sown field so I had to go elsewhere. On the same estate but a different field I found a few pigeons feeding and a decent line in from a huge wood half a mile away. Time was pushing on so I made the decision to set up and we were in our separate hides by 1:30. We had a magnet and a dozen plastic decoys. The decoying today was the best of the year so far and pigeons set their wings to come in from all angles and from great heights. I have rarely witnesses such determination of passing pigeons to decoy into a pattern and at times it was breath taking to see just how they set their wings and came in from a very great height. This gave us the opportunity to shoot some very difficult birds and we both pulled off some pretty decent shots. There were not hundreds but enough to give us a very pleasant afternoon and when we packed in just before the rain at 5:00 we picked 61 pigeons and 3 carrion crows. JDog
You must have lots of happy friends at the minute JDog ! Yes quite a few come out of the woodwork at harvest time. None of them are winter rape shooters as you can imagine.

pigeon controller
Well done , good result, banter in the hide is great at times. We found that the birds have been really committed to decoys lately coming in from great heights, folding there wings and dropping like stones. I went to get some shells yesterday and the gun shop had sold out of any sixes just shows how many shooters are out at present.
