mickyh
Just look at the size of the fish Supermarkets are selling ! They are all on the minimum limit,I'll bet they have never had the chance to breed. We need to look at minimum sizes again. Same with crabs and Lobsters. Sprackles
Crabs and lobsters are already above breeding size so can't see the gripe there. Its illegal to land berried females too. Fish landing sizes are already a good bit larger than they were a few years ago and if you follow the link I posted, Mackerel stocks are extremely healthy so once again, what;s the gripe. Fish is stupidly expensive these days in some parts of the country so a big fish will cost big money and the demand for an affordable piece of fish is met by the smaller fillets. henry d
Sandeels as well. Bizarre, I was fishing South Shields pier a few weeks ago and was hooking sandeels every other cast-ish until the ebb. Missed the mackerel by a couple of hours though. margun
Went on a boat off Cornwall last week and had a few pier sessions. I caught nothing and my missus caught 1. Skipper of the boat said it's been the worst year for mackerel he's known. I remember going out on boats down there in the past and being over a shoal for 1-2 miles

yod dropper
Very poor here for 4(?) years which coincides with Icelandic and Faroese unilateral decisions to increase their take, seem to recall might be threefold.

thepasty
I was out on the rocks yesterday to bag a few for dinner, the sea was boiling with them, same goes for white bait, I havent seen it like that for years. There were so many and in so close that you barely needed a rod. I couldnt keep up with the float rig and feathering at the same time so I got my 4yr old lad on the float rig ... he loved it. I bagged a few for dinner then changed onto super light gear for a bit of sport.... A cracking couple of hours. Teal
Big numbers of mackerel off Cornwall at the moment. So much so that the shore was literally covered in whitebait after they had been chased in and beached. Even the seagulls couldn't manage any more fish, I'll upload a photograph in due course. Never seen anything like it.
Dunkield
I was wondering how you were getting on, that post has just answered that one
strangford wildfowler
Mackeral numbers have picked up brilliantly was out on Sunday and caught a dozen ( just enough for a bbq) although I could have caught ten times that amount cause they where rushing in there hundreds if not thousands! Just when wreck fishing for an hour after then itstarted lashing with rain so back home we went, just escaping a soaking. Never seen anything like it. The spectacle of a large shoal hard in shore is indeed a thing of wonderment and beauty. In 2007 a mackerel shoal had pinned a dense shoal of white bait in the break zone and the beach wad alive with **** hawks grabbing an easy feed. I had a micromesh landing net in the motor and grabbed it. One swipe amongst the boiling hoards was more than enough for us, we had them over the coals that night, wooden skewers chocker with white bait impaled through the noggin. The beagle was hoovering them up off the beach as the gentle spilling waves were throwing up a score a time. I shall try and get the vid clip off my old phone. Sprackles
The greenies would accuse the commercial boys of catching too much and dumping it.......like I said earlier, stocks are very healthy. 177
recently there was plenty up here off the Berwickshire coast. What he said - I've got loads in my freezer for food and for winter cod and whiting bait. My daughter and I were catching loads on light gear from Berwick, past the bend and towards the end of the stone pier. She's 6 and had a ball with a trout spinning rod, 15lb braid and a small jelly eel lure It's slowed right down to a bare trickle now though with very few to be had - a month ago it was bedlam
