Went last evening for a shot to a small local farm only about 100 acres, its a hilly little farm all up hill from the road.. Parked up flicked the lamp on 4 rabbits on a paddock easy shots but passed on them, walked up the track about 20 + on a 1/2 acre again just walked passed them. Walked a few more small bumpy fields

plenty of rabbits on them, but could not be bothered to shoot them last night. Walked to another little field seen a very small cub about 60 y away, i sat on my butt for a few minutes then flicked on the lamp it was still there only moved a few yards it was mousing it took no notice of lamp  . Watch it for about 5 + mins then thought i'd have some fun give it a few quiet calls on the wam up went his ears and it walked right in to about 8 yards and sat on its butt. Liked to have had a mate with a camera to have taken a pic of us both sat on our butts. I gave a little cough and he just trotted up the hill under a new double fenced planted hedge and again sat and watched me for a minute or two before it went on his way. I had a smoke and a laugh and walked on to see if any more bunnies about seen plenty more but left them for another nights sport. :good: Lot of lucky rabbits and fox that i was not in killing mode. atb Terry

Over the last 10 years i seem to be doing a lot of just enjoying walking about and not shooting. Its not as if there are not many rabbits or foxes etc plenty of both. Some nights they get unlucky that i'm out to shoot. If i get a call of a mate to say they got a problem then they get a right bashing. A few weeks back as a post i put up i seen 11 foxes 1 morning could have shot 5 without even calling them in and prob could have called a couple of the others as well, but let them go without a shot fired. Had it of been winter time and closer to lambing time then their luck would have run out. Only thing that gets shots everytime are my best mates the crows.:lol:

Crows/ magpies have very short thrift from me if im out with my guns. But iv been a load of times with my guns over last few years and seen foxes an rabbits going about their daily business out in the fields and never fired a shot in anger. Just chose to sit and watch them whether it would be a fox on the hunt or rabbits chasing each other about etc. Walked home just has satisfied as i may have been if i had shot something. As you rightly said its not all about blood lust and blasting every thing for the sake of it. Though i must admit crows come near under the pain of death with no mercy lol as its always a pleasure shooting one of those lol.

next week will there be a post saying someone has nicked my permission? as the farmer want rabbits shot?

Yeah, my thoughts too.

If you have asked a farmer for permission to shoot on his land, and he has agreed and granted as such, then you aren't supposed to be going out as if it's your own personal 'public private footpath'.

Those cute foxes that you only shoot at lambing time are breeding and learning the lie of the land for the rest of the year. The rabbits dig holes and cause damage all year round, whether you are in the mood to shoot them or not.

I was out myself last night eccles and ended up watching young rabbits enjoying the sun more than I did shooting them, sometimes its such a pleasure to sit watch and learn than kill. Most of my permissions are beef herd farms and as such I can pretty much just go out and get some fresh health meat when its needed, I came home with more mushrooms and blackberries than I did rabbit.

Shoot more than my fair share of foxes bud, if i shot all the rabbits then will have more trouble with foxes killing lambs then, got to keep a balance mate.No wonder a lot on here ain't got out to bloody shoot. When they call they all know i'll be there straight away and sort out anything they want culling.

Good for you on not shooting them. As mentioned, it's not about killing everything you see. I've been in my hide and watched foxes walk past within shooting distance, but let them go. I've also watched fox cub's playing in the ferns etc, which would have been an easy shot. But it was nice to see them play. :good:

I think there is a big difference in culling/controlling as to blasting at everything an anything just because someone said you can shoot it on their land. Never been asked to leave a permission for lack of shooting pests/vermin and hope I never will. If I invited any one out to my permissions and they wanted to blast this, that and the other. Then I can assure you they won't be asked again not ever. I decide when I shoot at anything and no one else whether farmer or land owner.

Spot on Terry :good: There's a difference between management and annihilation. One of the small farms I do has a chap on it who's wiped out everything that flys, hops or scrambles up a tree ??? The place is devoid of anything now. I had spotted a small warren of rabbits a few months ago and bar the odd one, have let them be. Sadly he found them and bragged he'd taken the lot. Got £2 each for them. :hmm: He was saying that they used to shoot 60-70 a week for a few years and then for some reason they disappeared........DERRRRR!!

Hi Terry

I was out Saturday night saw 15 - 20 rabbits and 8 hares didn't raise the gun. I don't generally shoot hares unless somebody asks for one to eat, the farmers trust me to keep the numbers down but non of them want them wiped out completely.Went out today with the new Jack Russell terrier pup, my Mrs had found a birthing burrow(rabbit) right in the middle of her allotment the mother and pup started digging so I pulled the older bitch off and the pup at 17 weeks was down the hole and pulled out 6 baby rabbits so a good start for her

I'm on the side of those who think it's nice to give nature a break sometimes.

When I'm out I often watch things rather than shoot them. More so with deer, but I don't shoot every fox or rabbit I see either. The only exceptions to the rule are magpies and on one of my shoots squirrels. I would be swiftly removed if I let a squirrel go on this ground, and I can't bring myself not to gun down every magpie I see after what they have done to the little birds that nest in our hedge at home!

When the crop looks like it may be getting hit I will shoot what's needed, quite hard even. When there's no visible damage and a few bunnies hopping around, who are they hurting? Then there's foxes - if I shoot all of them I'll have more work to do on the bunnies. They don't harm beef cattle or crops and some of my land owners have asked me not to shoot them.
