oscarsdad
Might be a sabre wasp - there was one on my pillow as I went to sleep last week but my terrier jumped on the bed and nailed it - in the dark! I don't know if he smelt it or not but it was not nice to realise it was on my head lol!

FalconFN
Isn't that one of those critters that crawled into Chekov's ear on Star Trek?

smokinggun
I've caught a couple in the house over summer while I have the windows open, wondered what they were myself.

Mungler
Was it aggressive? We came into daily contact with some paper wasps whilst on holiday this year. They were entirely placid and bee like in their focus on what they were doing (which was trying to build what appeared to be a singleton nest / cocoon in the pleats to the villas curtains). They were also quite intelligent - if we shut the doors to the villa they would systematically try every other door and window and then lastly the chimney). I'm glad I resisted the urge to give em what for. We did get pestered by the normal waspies out there and they got a taste of the electric bat. norfolk dumpling
Gather these are totally harmless - but that's not how they look when you are 15ft up a ladder....
