fella
I've never made it before but fancy it this year. Some guidance on recipes etc would be helpful!

Dunkield
There are some recipes further down in this section I think. Bumper year for berries looking at the hedges round here, a good year to make some that's for sure.

Paul T
First get your Sloes. I use this recipe...http://www.shootingtimes.co.uk/homefeature/400399/Sloe_Gin__Captain_Harrimans_accelerated_sloe_gin.html
r1steele
Gin... sloes.... sugar in a bottle +1 About the same amount of sugar as sloes and leave it somewhere cool and dark. Give it a swirl around about once a week until the sugar has dissolved. Some like to leave for quite a while and some like to decant it not long after the sugar has gone. Try a sip and when it suits you it can be bottled.
landyboy
1lb of sloes 1 litre vodka or gin 1lb sugar don't worry about the odd leaf etc give it a shake once a week or so and leave for a year in a cool dark place !

Fatcatsplat
Don't mess about waiting for the first frost - Use them now while they're there!! Just make sure that every one has a hole/slash or whatever in it to let the good stuff out!

AlistairB
Found a huge treeful last night, as big as grapes, i'm off picking on Saturday, might just be ready for Christmas!
Dunkield
Even though there are plenty to be seen they are very small berries this year, so they may just need a bit longer...
r1steele
I've been making it for years now but has anyone ever tried with brown sugar. Just a thought.
norfolk dumpling
They say wait for a frost before picking sloes but in one mag suggested freeze then bash with rolling pin which has same end result. Got damson gin and cherry brandy ready now - very difficult not to have a nip, especially cherry B!
unclestuffy
I put a spoon full of vanilla essence into each 75cl gin bottle, and I think I makes it a nicer taste.
Dunkield
Saw some sloes out on the dog walk this morning, bigger than the others I have seen so keep your eyes peeled some seem to be doing better than others. Maybe as these are south facing?
