Denboy
hi guys I went out yesterday to shoot some pigeons over rape that was drilled 2 months ago and not a pigeon in sight Could it be because they're feeding else where? The rape is 150mm high could it be well on the way before winter sets in and they won't be interested? Let me know what you think guys
kitchrat
hi guys I went out yesterday to shoot some pigeons over rape that was drilled 2 months ago and not a pigeon in sight Could it be because they're feeding else where? The rape is 150mm high could it be well on the way before winter sets in and they won't be interested? Let me know what you think guys Sounds as though it's grown too well. Some people say it gets bitter as it grows (how would they know?) but observation does show they like it short. Look for previously-grazed areas. Could just be easier landing?? Or is it sweet and juicy when short?? That's the pattern with, for example, beech leaves. They love the buds and just-emerging leaves, then no interest after that. TIDES EDGE
Its an acorn year and there is still plenty of stubbles left I doubt that the pigeon will hit the rape until christmas time unless we get some hard weather
mossy835
you wont see pigeons on rape yet, only if your lucky iv been out today just looking at rape not a bird in sight.
fenboy
Too early for rape as has been said , the crop may have got away well but it will soon get knocked back by frosts and then the pigeon will be more interested
la bala
still to much other food on the table yet.
cocknee
I will be very surprised, at least in this area if the pigeons are on the rape in any numbers this side of Christmas and maybe well into the new year there are so many acorns and berries. The acorns are dropping off the trees now and most of the stubbles have gone so I imagine there will be some good bags shot over acorns in a few weeks time. JDog
Pigeons are certainly not feeding on rape round here yet and I wouldn't expect them to for another month or so. The ones feeding in direct drilled rape fields where the rape has come through well seem to be gleaning the old barley. Obviously that is not the case everywhere. Chrispti had a decent bag of over 100 in Hampshire only this week.

gazbev
It's a good year for all fruit and berries and pigeons love them, the sloes I've had for the gin have been the best I've ever seen. I backed myself into a hedge on Saturday shot four that were just flying past over the rape and they were all rammed with acorns. Someone said they will probably wait till after Christmas for shooting over rape,I think that will be about right unless we get some really hard weather.
