pigeon controller
Friday was the only day I could shoot this weekend due to a family gathering on Saturday. We set out at 09.00 as normal with trepidation as the BBC weather had said that the rain would be clearing during the day ,yet my Iphone said it would get worse during the day . We had no idea where to look as the sky was heavy and no birds were flying. We set out to look at the bean stubble as a starting point when we arrived it had been re seeded with coated wheat seed . The suface was covered with beans and seed , no pigeons or even crows. We watched it for twenty minutes and three birds flew over and went to the woods so we decided to move and look at the field we shot last Saturday which was barley stubble. This field is pretty exposed to the wind and when we arrived the drizzle was very heavy making it difficult to see from our vantage point so we drove down to the field and walked across . We were gob smacked as we walked on the field it had been re seeded and most of the barley ears had been turned in . As we walked the length of the field all the crows and pigeon were on the far end where we shot last week so we decide to give it a go . We contacted the farmer and he said ok, he said that they worked it Thursday and it had loads of birds on it when they left. We set up using the same hide pole holes as last week and put a brolly at our back . We hoped that the birds would return to the field that they had been feeding on all week . We stared shooting at 13.00 and set up with the normal twelve thawed birds, two on the magnet and the others in two groups each side of the magnet, as we shot birds we added them to the pattern so at the end the pattern was a good thirty yards wide each side of the hide. The crows will not normally come close to the magnet with pigeon on it but they flew over our heads from the back and flared allowing us the shot. As it was a dark day it stopped at about 16.30 so we packed up at 17.00. We picked up eightyeight pigeon and ten crows. I think DB must have bee feeling the cold as the picture is blurred from him shaking??.

JDog
So family gatherings take precedence over pigeon shooting do they? Another good find. I will be interested to hear where you find decent flights in the next few weeks. By that I mean what they are feeding on. Pigeon numbers seem to be ebbing away round here, a few in most fields, some on field margins after acorns, but no flights to speak of. While I was sorting the Wifes horse out today I passed under this Oak Tree and was amazed at the volume of acorns , these will spoil if they do not get eaton . I can not imagine the amount of similar food in my shooting territory" The Acient Forest of Arden " which is all Oaks and covers all my shooting. Picture from my Iphone so not brilliant . JDog
It's the same round here. I am not sure if I have ever seen more acorns. Will the birds flight out of the Forest of Arden in the next few months or will they simply drop out of the trees to feed on the glut of acorns? My son came over this weekend and said they were forecasting snow in November so they may be covered if not eaten.
