A friend of mine recently bought a Boyds stock for his Hmr from the US and total cost including import tax and customs handling charge was £126.10.

It was longer in customs waiting for him to pay his money this end than it took to come from the US.

All he did was order it direct and paid with VISA and it came through without any drama.

Im not having much luck at the moment they either point blank wont do it whether this be a legal issue or not im not sure or as stated above once it gets above $100 this export tax kicks in and they cant/wont do it . The only bit of hope i have had is one company suggested using a exporter but im struggling there aswell. I have not given up hope yet but i cant see myself getting much further. If anybody has any other ideas please let me know.

I have ordered and successfully received items from Brownells (several times), Robert Louis Co, and others. Never had any problems, but tracking parcel shows it spends 2 or 3 days in the USA, then sometimes 2 - 3 weeks in UK customs. You are normally penalised by the customs 'agent' who is often ParcelFarce with a huge 'handling fee' as well as any duty and VAT. This can make a real 'dollar bargain' into an expensive 'pound purchase', so be aware of these costs before you start.

It will be $160 (£100) for the item. It will probably cost $25 (£15) for shipping. You then pay 20% VAT on that total, so £115*1.20 = £138. Parcel force will charge you £14 more for handling, so roughly £142 when all is said and done.

For items that you can also get here which are usually line priced (same number but different currency sign) , there isn't much difference until you are talking about a couple hundred quid in value for the item.

I wouldn't argue with any of the above. Brownells have always (I've used them about 4 or 5 times) been very fair with the shipping (usually USPS). There are instances where you also have to pay import duty as well as VAT. You will need to look at HMRC web pages to make that call, but there is a guide here http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&propertyType=document&_pageLabel=pageTravel_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000014#P25_2720

Hope that helps
