CZ550Kevlar
A group of us are going clay shooting, a female bridge engineer going with us has never shot before so we are going to Millride to have some fun before we go to our conference. Thing is I only have 12 gauge shotguns, I have a remmington 870 pump with the remmington shock absorber pad, I have 2 semi auto escorts (1 standard & 1mpa with the pistol grip) and lastly an over under aya. Given that we don't have a 20 gauge what would you guys recommend? It's either the aya and I get some 21gramme eley carts which I'm told are soft or it's the semi auto which is softer but obviously an escort isn't going to cycle a 21 gramme cart, or the pump with 21 gramme. I'm new to all this learner stuff especially where non men are concerned. Edit- for the record I suggested leaving her out but apparently that's not team spirited. HDAV
CompX 21g eley first 21g or subsonics the autos maywell not cycle them so if the AYA fits use that (the ground may well lend you a 20 and sell you a box of carts.) fit is important. A pump is going to be a pain for a novice............ Also suggest she wear a sports bra or one without clasps or bits on the straps as these dig in and really hurt according my missus Good shooting bra http://www.damaris.co.uk/lace-v-bra-silk-lace-zanzibar-aw12-306-damaris Bad shooting bra http://www.asos.com/Marios-Schwab/Kallisti-by-Marios-Schwab-for-ASOS-Inc-Mesh-No-Bra-Bra-Soft-Triangle-Bra/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=2787290&r=2 Also womens eye dominance is different to mens so worth being aware of (may be best to squint her none aligned eye) Photo would help Edited October 16, 2013 by HDAV
CZ550Kevlar
Thank you for the tips, if I mention bras I'll get sued for sexual harassment and sent for reprogramming, she can have the pain and I'll swear ignorance. Looks like its 21g carts and the aya.
HDAV
Just mention that anything hard between the end of the stock and shoulder isnt a good idea. One clay coach i know just tells them to wear a sports a bra............ (depends on the size of the jubblies tho............ Make sure the AYA fits.... Squash wavy
I personally think the weight is more important. I had a lady over and she was more comfortable with my Hatsan Escort than the Beretta Silver Pig Field. Less recoil of course too.
Sian
From a lady's point of view: 21gm Comp X is a good cartridge for a novice lady. Silver Pigeon 12g is what I use and she probably will find it a little heavy to start because the gun will be in her shoulder longer than usual as is usually the case for someone who has never held a gun before. Likely also her upper body strength is not as developed as a man's. Bra advice is very apt and quite frankly worth mentioning because it can really hurt and leave horrible marks. Most importantly make sure the gun is mounted correctly for her and then she is less likely to get pain and hopefully she will enjoy it and want to take it up. For what it is worth anyway. CZ550Kevlar
I'm taking my escort for me to use anyway so we'll see which fits her best, I know I can get 21g eleys but those hull comp x seem to be thin on the ground around here although I'll do some phoning around. Worst case she has to fire a shot then cycle the escort manually.

Well done you for doing all you can to ensure that she has a positive experience. These situations are always a trade off between what gives the pupil the best chance of some success and comfort! Ideally you will find a recipe that can do both, any 21gr load through a 12g is going to be very soft, but obviously a 24gr 20g load through a 6lb gun isn't! plus in my opinion a second barrel shot is only academic, for safetys sake only load ONE cartridge at a time untill they have gained more exp. REGARDS REMMYMAN This is why I was thinking the Hatsan Escort, As she is learning and as you quite rightly reminded me load 1 at a time so the semi auto not cycling isn't really going to be a problem, but then if she catches on fast then shooting pairs isn't going to happen as she'll have to cock it manually, I think escorts can just about cycle a 24g cart.I think it'll be a trial and error thing. Floating Chamber
You need a Vintage Winchester Model 50/59 with a floating chamber; it will cycle subsonics.

welshwarrior
Women tell me the bra can be a real issue get a feel for who your teaching I make a point of looking at a bloke if possible highlight the area of the should the gun goes into and say you don't want any corse straps or metal in this area He normally says he's fine I then highlight where the Boggs are if anyone needs them before we head off. Allows the women to slip away and fix there underwear ;-) A couple of my regular clients know my wife shoots and ask for shooting bra advice. I may print HDAVs photos now. HDAV
In all seriousness http://m.marksandspencer.com/mt/www.marksandspencer.com/Medium-Impact-Racer-Santoni-Non-Wired/dp/B0030JEYL4?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_2&nodeId=52459031&sr=1-2&qid=1382176193&pf_rd_r=10F3ZQRQM0B1YVDFKB7B&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=52459031&pf_rd_p=321381387&pf_rd_s=related-items-3 is probably the answer but it does highlight how you have to be aware of many things when introducing people to shooting first time I would always say should be with an instructor in pleasant surroundings with decent facilities like clean bogs and some where warm and dry to sit. tx4cabbie
I've always used lyalvale high vel 24s, when lady novices are shooting with us, right mix of light recoil and decent chance of hitting. if you really want to teambuild, and be nice, a tenner or so (way out of date price) will get you a pachmayr recoil pad that velcros onto a bra strap, and is a great thing to have in your bag for that new shooter. Bit of tape makes it work for kids too, and stops lady shoulders/chest from recoil pain.
