First Shoot Day

We had our first shoot day yesterday and everything went as well as i had hoped. The weather wasn't quite on out side and we had one or two heavy showers throughout the day accompanied by persistent drizzle. However we slogged on and my team of beaters and picker ups did me proud. The guns shot well and had 99 shots for 36 birds. Cheap shooting at just £16.66 a bird! We would have managed a 40+ bag had the weather been on our side as quite a few birds were determined not to fly in the rain. We also lost a few on drives as it was the first time we have ever had the shoot on the land so a big learning curve but i certainly now know what to improve for next time. Stops and flagmen need tweaking slightly as do one or two of the flushing points but all in all a great day. All the guns were over the moon with how to day went and already people asking me if i have any dates still available!

It looks as though everyone enjoyed themselves which is the important bit. There was a good mix of young and old, boys and girls and experience and otherwise.

This is not a criticism, but next year why don't you put back the first shoot until the leaves are off the trees? The birds will fly better when they can get up above the trees rather than having to fly through them. You may see the difference on your third or fourth shoot.

I understand your point but to be honest the birds didnt struggle to get through the tree's it was just that quite a few didnt even try probably partly due to the weather! I've always been advised to cut flushing points in most drives and with a little bit more cutting in one drive i should be able to perfect it.
