kiffy
hi folks, im wondering what you guys do to help with the rust issues while fowling? i got my gun both wet and muddy this weekend and by the time i got home it was rusty.. i knew to expect it and oiled and cleaned the gun straight away (as i do each time a gun goes out, fowling or field) but im wondering if theres anything i can do to slow the process down a bit
happy.plinker
How about keeping a thermos of warm water in the car to pour over your gun or a good spray with WD40, I used to do this when sea angling for my gear.
figgy
Spray allover the metal parts of gun with oil and wipe over lightly before going out. I use Legia oil in the big red cans it leaves a nice film of oil on the gun. I then use the Napier spray oil cleaming product with VP90 corrosion inhibiter added after coming home to clean and protect it in the cabinet. VP 90 patch in your cabinet, it bonds to the metal parts to stop rust without getting into the wood. Frog lube looks good for fowling guns as muck don't stick to it, read the reveiws. Think ill be getting some before long. Figgy Edited October 22, 2013 by figgy
Big Mat
I cover mine in oil before going out on the marsh, then when get back to the car, wipe off water and mud and wack some oil on before a full clean at home.
rimfire4969
As long as it's had an oiled rag over it before you go and have another one waiting in your car to give it a rub over before you drive home for a proper clean not a lot more you can do. Wildfowler325
I use 3 in 1 silicone spray. Prevents rust really well and keeps every thing lubricated. Its a dry lubricants so u dont have a slippy, oily gun http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360682781912?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

utectok
The only thing that stops my gun from rusting on the foreshore is acf 50 a coat on before you go out and wash down and recoat afterwards http://www.acf-50.co.uk Fleabay is the best option for a can of the spray
Wildfowler12
I cover mine in oil before going out on the marsh, then when get back to the car, wipe off water and mud and wack some oil on before a full clean at home.+1 This is what I did before I bought the camo S'nova. If you're shooting in a marsh environment, oil, oil and oil some more. Keep a can in the car and apply once you've finished (before you drive home)
Gabrielcosmin.dinu
My dad used to spray them with bee's wax based before and with something similar to WD40 after but his biggest secret were the Vapor Corrosion bags (VCI bags), I don't know if they are found on UK market but for sure you can get them. langlands
'Steam proof' grease, (used on railways that run steam engines). Just keep putting a new coat on every trip out on the foreshore. This was the only thing that stopped my Baikal auto barrel from rusting. I can't say where it can be bought, as my mate gets it from where he works.
kiffy
thanks for all the tips guys, quite a few varied ones to off out again this weekend so i think until i can get something ill throw in a towel and an oily rag must remember to check my vp90 in my safe as well as im sure its expired by now
strangford wildfowler
WD40 and an oily rag does the trick for my gun plus there not very heavy so you could put them at the bottom of your game bag when out fowling and when your done you can give them wee wipe down b4 you come home to give the them a proper cleaning Edited October 23, 2013 by strangford wildfowler
kent
A proper wildfowling gun shouldn't corrode over a few hours, my SX3 with a rustproof coating under the cammo dip is no issue. That said the s/sides I have are a bit of a pain, the only way is lightly wipe them over the night before and dry and clean them as soon as the dog is sorted (few areas allow proper cleaning at the car) Think on about the type of bag its stored in though some hold moisture and salts which is bad. kiffy
i wouldnt say mine is a proper wildfowling gun, although it is has a 3 1/2 inch chamber, its the benelli in my sig and is in lovely condition apart from last weeks rust, most of which wiped of with the oily rag when i got home not even thinking of it for this season but does the duracoat coating or hydro dipped coatings help? I dontthink hydro dips do a great deal but the SX3 cammo has a rust resisting metallic coating under the cammo and is very rust resistant, I don't think its the only gun that has this sort of treatment. I am surprised the SBE does not

Better to leave them in the car
