whitey10765666
Where did you stand on Chris Hoy Bradley Wiggins Mary Peters Kelly Holmes Tanni Grey-Thompson Seb Coe Henry Cooper Gordon Richards Henry Cecil Jackie Stewart Stirling Moss Jack Brabham Frank Williams? The list goes on and on, If you disagree just because its Beckham thats wrong, if its all sportsmen/women your arguement starts to stand up However.... If you're only going to give them out to members of the armed forces, how do you work out who gets one? Whilst our armed forces do a fantastic job in general, do they all deserve a knighthood? What about the RNLI?, they do their job/risk their lives without pay, as do mountain rescue That list also goes on and on. In general those that decide who gets what get it mostly right, there is always going to be the bad apple that sneaks through, but until someone can come up with a foolproof way of doing it, then its not bad the way it is Yes i think all the armed forces deserve it a damn site more than the list of muppets you put on your list, with exception of the RNLI who again put their lives in danger for others
Guest rimotu66
What about Steve Webster, multiple world sidecar champion ? A true gentleman as well as fantastic sportsman. Absolutely agree, the list would go on and on.

Honours are given out for varying reasons, some to the military, some for civil servants and some to civilians and I'm fairly sure they have different names for each 'order' of knighthood. masmiffy
As I see it if they are going give these stupid things out he is as good and a lot better that some of the people who have them I gave up calling anyone sir when I left school many years ago the same thing goes for army ranks captain or major once they have left the forces are just plain Mr/Mrs to me. I did the same and as for the forces retaining rank when they leave what a load of ****!

As I said there isnt an easy way to sort it..... Now If ALL members of the forces are to get them, what about the bad apples in the forces?, they are there...... You are obviously pro forces (a good thing) and anti sport or anyone else who gets one (bad thing) See....its not a fair world..... Are they ALL muppets I have listed? We can all put forward people we think deserve them......but people wouldnt agree with your list as they wouldnt agree with mine (thats not my list by the way it was random sportsmen) C'est la vie as the French say
vampire
I did the same and as for the forces retaining rank when they leave what a load of ****! They don't retain rank, they retire on the rank above,so lt col becomes col and gets index linked pension.

poontang
Its not a sport, its a game. True story. No, it's definitely a sport. Those nice people at the Oxford Dictionary say so, so it must be a true story.

Paddy Galore!
i don't mind, he's a clean living kind of chap and will hopefully divert attention away from the likes of saville & co. whether he really deserves one or not is another matter imo. I can think of at least 4 on that list that haven't won anything for their country, but have excelled at their chosen sport, As I said earlier those names were randomly chosen, given time I could compile a longer list of those that havnt won anything for their country. I could also compile a list that have won world titles that get ignored because they don't do a "popular" sport Again, as I said earlier, until someone can come along with a foolproof system then we are stuck with what we have

FalconFN
I think you will also find the people in the list where all individuals and not as part of a team,That is debatable, cycling is a team sport with an individual selected as a principle rider with support from the team, motorsport too is arguably a team effort with a number 1 and 2 driver.Edit: what about Ian botham and Don bradman, jack Charlton etc? Kes
People do 'sport' for either money and fame or its a passion - I dont find mega salaries and brands worthy personally. Nice enough lad but thats it. Many on the list above did so much more - take Jackie Stewart - a passion for safety, drove changes from 'the killing years'. Different class of effort and worthy of the award. However, DB does however deserve capitals for his name

old rooster
Bottom line if the knighthoods are handed out to people who perhaps are not really deserving it just dilutes the value of the award. Pretty much par for the course these days.
