Myself and my son, went for just an hour today, to show him whats it all about.

He is only 5 and enjoyed himself a lot, his first time out ferreting and he wanted to stay longer, but i want to keep him eager.

Just got the 3, but as i said, i did not want him to get bored.

Great hour out learning, but, mum ( wife) was not happy at all when we got back and she had found out where we had been  , she said that the other kids in school will take the **** out of him if they find out. :good:

Who cares, we both loved it :yp: But, dont know if i can get away with taking him again, aparently, its best to wait till his 12 :o , according to Mrs wife.

Pics below of our hour together. :good:

Frank,

Tell her to stop being so silly! My lad comes with me shooting, granted he is 9, but he has a queue of friends from school who want to join him beating most weekends! Even my 5 year old daughter has come along a couple of times and loves it!

He also had to recently write a narrative about an activity he enjoys. He decided to explain beating so wrote it all out, stops, flagging up, blanking in, drives, pwg, picking up and so on. Ended up having to stand in front of the class to present it as it was more interesting than most of the other pieces of work about going to play football, going to the park, going shopping, etc, etc at the weekend that most of them churned out!

I grew up on a farm and started with ferrets/air rifles about the same age as your lad...stick to it!

I've fished since I could walk but only really got into shooting etc when I was 10 or so. As long as hes keen dont worry if he doesn't get out too much to start with, he will enjoy it more when he does and you don't want to go out for too long at once and him get cold and fed up. For that eact reason when I was younger I was never taken fishing in the Winter. I can see the logic of it now but it sucked a bit at the time. :good:

Well done on another good day with the ferrets.

I think that Mrs F had the hump because your lad was booked in to have the barnet chopped

And i do agree looks like he could do with a hair cut

You keep taking him though, the younger the Better. My three year old Girl gets involved already with the Game that i bring home from Shooting/Ferreting trips. I found Her in the Kitchen the other week sitting on the floor with a dead Duck between her legs with its head laid in one hand stroking it with the other, as i walked in she told me to be quiet as she had just got it to sleep

I bet she wouldnt do that if she knew it was a real duck

Do you have any stuffed ducks lying around the house which she could have mistaken it for?

I have always let Her hold Rabbits ducks Pigeons and others that i have shot, She has even poked a Muntjac Buck in the eye

The only non-real Ducks in the house are three little yellow plastic bath Ducks but everybody has those (don''t they).

Looks like you BOTH had a good day there Frank

Though i disagree with the waiting till he is 12 to go again as in the mean time is when his mind will no doubt be poisoned by those who don't understand the country way of life and INSIST hunting is wrong etc etc

If he enjoys it then that should be reason enough to take him again.

Besides if his Mates rib him for it then they can't be very good mates. You could always offer to take one or so of his mates too for a day and perhaps they will ALL get a taste of it and enjoy it

I agree with the subject in the Sporting Shooter where they would like to see Children go on days out to the countryside and have a go at Shooting and take a genuine interest.

Maybe then the kids could EDUCATE their dead beat parents

Keep a copy of the photo for when he's older and I'll bet he'll remember the day. My boys can remember fishing trips from when they were young.

My oldest boy had his first SGC when he was 12 1/2 years old. He was really keen then and just the right size to chuck between a hawthorn hedge and sheep fencing to to retrieve runaway ferrets  .

Great photo to reflect on in later years  .

Frank,

I started when I was the same age, if my father went without me there was hell too play. I can still remember certain days from then and that was, whoooo a very long time ago. The basics I was taught then are still with me today. Catch them young and teach them well and our sport will live on.

My 13 year old daughter comes beating on our syndicate shoot when she can. She's also a fair shot with a Ruger 10/22, and has even shot my .308 at our local military ranges. It is good for a kid and teaches them discipline and, most importantly, respect. She had to do a 10 minute talk at school for English last year and gave her class a lecture on target shooting and field stripping a Ruger

I always like to think that sometime in the future she'll be able to say "My dad may not have taught me much but he did teach me how to use a rifle". That should sort out the boyfriend problems
