Woodcock shoot in North Wales

I will be leaving in a couple of hours to take a almost 6 hour drive to North Wales for a Woodcock Shoot.
It is like Christmas has arrived early, I have been like a kid, I have been looking forward to this shoot (2 days)

The shoot has been arranged by Marko HighBird 70, and he could not have more attentive. Covering every possibility.

Tonight we will meet for a pint and instruction, and then on Monday and Tuesday it is the Woodcock, and from Marko's reports they are there waiting for us.
It will not be about numbers, but as is usual, the camaraderie and spectacle of the day.

I will give a follow up report on my return.

Take some big cartridges as there's some strange goings on in the Valley's just saying.

Hope you have a great time.

Look forward to your shooting report.

Figgy

Good advice indeed, watch out for the bara-brith they can get quite big especially in the foot hills of mount Snowdon and around the Mon

And if you get your chance at one then take it, fantastic once toasted with some butter

I was a baker all my working life so, a Bara Brith does not hold any fear factor for me :lol:

6 hours to get there? Are you going via Edinburgh?

:lol::lol: :lol:

I thought we were travelling in my truck (0 to 70 by Thursday lunchtime :oops: ) but we went in Roberts Mercedes so comfort and speed all the way :good::good: .

I will let you know about the shoot a little later.

The fun started on Sunday evening, before we had arrived at the venue. Sat nav. took us down a lane that became narrower by the minute, we eventually became wedged. We could feel the car lifting up as the wheels went up the embankment.

After 150 yards of reversing we finally got clear and then reached our destination. The evening saw us meet up with Marc "high bird 70" and a good meal was had at the local pub, and a fair amount of alcohol was dispatched.

On return to the B&B a few more drinks were had, and a few of us discovered that 2 of the 3 Italians with us were not session drinkers.

Every one woke the next day all feeling slightly tired, faces aching from the laughter of the night before, but all in good order for the day ahead.

The day was a little slow, but the service and attention given to all the shooters was excellent, we had Woodcock and Snipe, plus Pheasant. Marco attended to our every need and the pub lunch was superb.

In the evening we enjoyed another superb meal and entertainment at the pub and again at the B&B. That night was a late night and there were a few sore heads and slower than usual movement in the morning, but we were all up in time and ready for the forthcoming day.

Day two saw a lot of Woodcock and a lot of Snipe and we all managed to shoot some and bring the intended target to earth. Snipes proved to be a very difficult target. When shooting for Woodcock in particular, and Snipe it really is not about numbers but the quality of the target, and we must remember these are wild birds, not like when on a Driven Pheasant day, We ended the day with mid twenties on the Woodcock, 10/12 Snipe and 13 pheasant. One duck got away (the only Duck we saw) when a novice/newish shooter with us heard the call "DUCK" and promptly did so to all our amusement.

As ever with Pigeon Watch people, new friends were made and yes we will keep in contact. We have all placed our names down for next season, plus, if any vacancies arise this season we may well take up the spare places.

In closing I would recommend "Marco" aka high bird 70" he put on 2 good days shooting, with testing birds and a well organised shoot, he did not stop working to ensure all went well.

Not to be forgotten, the beaters were excellent and very attentive to our needs.

No, decided to let that one go. I used the 12g Browning that I use for everything.

The Snipe really take some shooting.

Last night I was given a tip, that seemed to put into to place a question we had.

Snipe flying really high and fast , look like a speck, you "waste" a cartridge by shooting in front of them, when the shot passes in front of them they are very sensitive of the force of the shot passing through the air and they dive towards the ground, thereby making the next shot a little easier (not a lot).

This would explain why in a couple of instances it appeared that the bird seemed to drop from the sky but no one could find it or be able to positively "mark it".

They are a cracking bird to shoot, cannot wait to do it again.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your time in the company of highbird70. A more amusing man does not exist. I hope that you have left a few for my visit in two weeks time when I will hopefully enjoy the company of a truly excellent team of beaters, shoot and miss a few woodcock and snipe, and feed off highbird70's enthusiasm for that type of shooting.

You will not be disappointed

You might want to take an old bit of Sacking or 1/2 metre of drain pipe to cover the barbed wire atop all of the fencing you will have to negotiate :good: .

One of the guns, and I wont mention Roberts name, tells me his b8llbag looks like it has had a fight with a cheese grater  , but then he does only have very short legs.

Dear Sirs/Madams,

I feel very flattered and quite proud of all the Woodcock shooting team, that we managed to delivered a great experience for all the guns, plus a lot of entertainment at night time, can believe what some gents got up to....The stuffed fox with clown, its the first one that comes to mind.

I completely agree with Terry, the first day started a little slow and some guns, were getting use to recognize/identify woodcocks, a few where not shot due to this reason, but the second day was very intense to say the least.

Terry was a fantastic guest to have on the days, a true gentleman..........by the way Terry...Mrs Owen as asked if you can buy a plant of geranium in flower, for next time, it looks that her recent one as been eaten from some strange animals :lol:   , Another Pw member was present....Little.Bob.....still I don't understand what's little :whistling::whistling: :whistling:

Again Thank you

Mark
