Training a Springer Spaniel - Book

I have a 13 week old Springer bitch. I have searched the forums to find a recommended book/manual that would assist me, as a beginner, regarding the training of the chocolate eyed devil. I have been unable to find something to suit my needs. Any pointers as to what is current and informative would be very much appreciated.

Training Spaniels by Joe Irving BUT some of his chastisement you need to be careful with if you have a soft dogs, which a lot of today's spaniels are.

Better IMO investing in a set of DVDs. David Lisset's (Bucchleuch Gundogs) are the best I think, they are expensive but worth it. Simon Tyers (Hawcroft Gundogs) are also very good.

I,ve also got a springer (7 months old) and I have to say , I have been reading a book called "gundog training made easy" its by a guy called Tony Price of Tawny Hill Gundogs,

I have to say its an excellent book and read and has certainly got my dog ahead of his age,

been reading a book called "training the mind of your gun dog" it was co written by my mothers best friends father if goes in to the thought processes of dogs and emotions they experience it was written in the 70's so some of the chastisment is a little harsh but it is also very positive in many other ways it also deals and discusses problems

I can never agree about film over books personally but your point on correction is spot on :good: the issue is actually recognising what you have in front of you  , many struggle purely by mis- reading this aspect alone. Hard spaniels and soft pit bulls still non the less do exist just to throw the spanner in the best laid plans :lol:

It's like this, Kent - a picture's worth the proverbial thousand words, and a moving picture (video) is worth 10,000 words when after watching it, you follow up with an actual gundog trainer who needn't even be as celebrated as Mssrs. Tyre, Lissett or even Halstead.

I will ask again, did you receive the book I sent to you by first class post last Saturday? I note that you were on the forum yesterday and that my previous enquiry went unanswered.

Seems such a shame that people take for free and don't thank.

I hope they just missed your post....
