big bad lindz
A bit of a long story but I have tried to keep it breif . This morning when packing away my gear (hide, decoys, etc) I was approached by by the landowner who`s land borders the shore and was asked what the **** I was doing shooting on his land. I replied by saying that I was in my rights between the spring high & low mean tide marks in Scotland we have right of access to wildfowl on the shore. (my feet were in the mud) A bit of a discussion took place as I felt that I was well within my rights to be where I was as I had previously contacted BASC. He suggested that I was trespassing on his land and that he would be in contact with the police. Although I was trying to be nice and calm about it all I felt that he was becoming aggressive both verbally and in his body language ( pointing his fingers in my face and raising his voice) and I said to him that there was no need to use this type of threatening mannerism and he replied by saying that I would know when I was being threatened. At that I said to him that I would also be in contact with the police. (Which I have done and had a good response and I have been told that I was not in the wrong.) During the conversation he went on a bit about how he is not into shooting but charges £70 for goose flights on his land (a high price so as not to encourage goose shooting !) and I also know he has paying guests on his estate for shooting deer, duck, pheasant & woodcock etc so a bit of a double standard. He is beginning to get a bit of a name for himself as this is not the first time that he has had a run in with wildfowlers. Although I do not intend to take his threats to seriously or pursue the matter further, it has been logged with the police and BASC Scotland in the event that it happens again. Part of his land runs very close to my house although the land has been leased to the forestry, I know his keper has taken guests on a walked up rough shooting through the woodland for woodcock etc, so next time I know they are in the woods I may just carry out some training with my own dogs. bodach
Ach there is always wan! Also not being a local takes a long time to be accepted, you did well to hold your calm hard not too! As said you had a perfect legal right to shoot the foreshore and I would let it go, no point in heating up matters with a neighbour. See you on Saturday? B. Spaniel
I have a feeling that it was more about you getting some free shooting rather then paying him to shoot, to be honest
kiffy
yeh that sounds more like it
southeastpete
More importantly, did you get any geese? You should ask for an apology letter :-)
big bad lindz
I have a feeling that it was more about you getting some free shooting rather then paying him to shoot, to be honest Sorry Spaniel, no. As you know the foreshore shooting is free in Scotland and I have access to inland shooting elswhere, both paid for & for free. The owner bought a very good shooting estate about 10 years ago and as he could not be bothered to run the estate as a shooting estate because is wife is a bit of an anti so the shooting went to pot. Both the stalking & the game shooting. I know a number of people who used to in days gone by shoot the estate and it was very well run. He is now having paying guests who want to shoot. so buisness is buisness. After this morning I dont think I will be getting any invites. It has more do do with his approach
kent
Its just simple bullying, the more he put off the better as far as he is concerned. Make a concerted effort to get as many on as possible for a while
misser
probably get laughed at for suggesting it but possibly recording any further conversations....least you'd have a bit more proof that you were not the aggressor...just an idea

Dave-G
I don't see anything wrong with free shooting if it's legal.
henry d
I think that if he is charging for shooting and has "guests" coming to decoy the geese soon and you are there shooting he might just be hoping that you won`t come back - just a thought really. The area I was in has no stubble fields near it but it is usualy a good flight line off the water to inland for the geese. I was actually down after duck and if any geese came by I would have had a crack at them but not a thing in range which also brassed me of a little, but as Arnie would say "I will be back" its to good an area not to and almost right on my door stop. wildfowler.250
To be honest, you did the right thing. Basically politely tell him to get stuffed. I'd be tempted to record the convo too,(just using my phone).

big bad lindz
Funny enough, we had the same problem there a couple of years a go! Hi Mate and welcome to PW. I have just sent you a PM. I know that I have not been the first wildfowler to have had a run in with this landowner and I do not thnk I will be the last. Our local club is trying to find out from any other club members and visiting wildfowlers when it happened, where you were and what was said. We are trying to build up a picture or a trend of this type of harrasment in case the matter gets out of hand. I know I was in the right and I am sure the other fowlers were as well. So if any other wildfowlers on PW who have read this and have had any dealings with cambusmore in the past please PM me. BBL
