The right cabinet and placement

I expect this has been asked many times so apologies in advance!!

I've been keeping my shotgun in my friends cabinet for months now (firearms officer aware), but want to have my own cabinet.

Is there a particular brand or certain spec I need to look for?

I want to go second hand to keep my costs down.

Is £50 a realistic expectation?

Should a second hand cabinet come with fittings?

I understand it should be fixed to an external wall, is that correct?

Can I just buy one, fit it, put my gun in it and then let the firearms officer know or does he need to come out first?

Regards

You might pick up a gun-safe for £50 - I'm sure some have, but I think you might be looking at nearer £100 than £50.

There is a specification issued by the Home Office. If you stick to a brand that complies with the relevant standard - Google for makes - and buy a second-hand one.

As the safes are normally bolted to a wall with Rawlbolts, they wouldn't normally come with the safe - they would still be in the wall.

Normally bolted to an outside wall and it would be wise to ask the FEO before moving your gun.

No set brands hunt around and £50 is achievable eBay etc.

It needs to be fix to the fabric of the building any solid wall is fine doesn't have to be external.

The FEO would like you to inspect then you start using your cabinet but your responsible for the guns security, it's up to you how you want to play it. If either way works for you ring and ask or tell them you now have an approved cabinet fitted at your address and will be storing your gun there.

I'd say £70 for a bratton sound 3 gun is more like it. Rawl bolts are 50 p each and yes I'd tell the feo esp if your moving it from one address to another . They always inspect mine even from one room to another plus then a bigger safe in my case but I'm cool with that . It gives them chance to check your guns etc

You can get a basic 3 gun for £50 second hand if lucky. BS7558 I think is the approved spec worth an email/letter to FLO letting them know the new arrangement, new ones sometimes come with fittings but £130 ish so worth looking for a used one and buying fittings....

All I might say is a new economy cabinet don't look so clever when the lock jambs up. Look for second hand of good quality, people pack in or upgrade to bigger cabinets all the time.

As regards fixing, get someone in who can. It need not be external walls or even brick for that matter but it must be secure in the opinion of the FEO. They are normally happier to advice in advance rather than have to say no on inspection, be aware some are very knowledgeable some are frankly numpties with a list

I got both mine off the Bay of E...

First one was a 3 gun Gunmate brand in very good nick buy it now for £40

Second one was a mint 5 gun Brattonsound extra deep for £50 buy it now.

The Brattonsound is ok, but not as robust as the Gunmate.

Get searching for a couple of weeks (if you've got time) and you'll probably drop on a bargain too.

I expect this has been asked many times so apologies in advance!! Yes, a search in history may help.

I've been keeping my shotgun in my friends cabinet for months now (firearms officer aware), but want to have my own cabinet. Do you have any conditions about storage on your SGC?

Is there a particular brand or certain spec I need to look for? Nope, but BS7558:92 would be useful

I want to go second hand to keep my costs down.

Is £50 a realistic expectation? Cabinets tend not to depreciate much, you may get lucky.

Should a second hand cabinet come with fittings? Not very often

I understand it should be fixed to an external wall, is that correct? NO, it must be securely affixed/not easily removable!

Can I just buy one, fit it, put my gun in it YES and then let the firearms officer know or does he need to come out first? If you already have a SGC/FAC security is your responsibility, feel free to advise your region as a courtesy if you want, although you are not legally obliged to at all!
