First foreshore goose

This morning i joined another pw member, motty, for a flight out somewhere different. Motty picked me up as my car is out of action and we headed for the marsh.

Met up and walked on with a few other fowlers before going out seperate ways. Got into possition and waited for the birds to start moving, could hear them starting to get restless and watched the first skein of pinks flight off further down from where we were.

After a little while one skein came our way and i fired, hit with the first barrel, started to drop but gave it another shot to make sure. Goose dropped 20/25 yards to my left. Dog marked it so i sent her. Dog gets there but couldnt find goose. Both dogs where sent but we didnt get up and look ourselves straight away as there where still geese moving. Few minutes later after a bait digger sent the geese off we started looking but couldnt find it anywhere. Another two fowlers joined us in the search but even with 4 dogs we could not find it.

**** law really, after 70+ flights in the last two seasons, i finally hit one and we can't find it  Motty may have caught it on camera but seen as he missed i dont think we'll be seeing that footage

Overall it was a good flight after 10+ blanks that i've been on, i shall be back on the foreshore next week!

Hard luck mat losing that first goose, makes you wonder how you lose stuff like that wigeon, I'm sure you will get another , your work is way higher than most fowlers so you will get them soon, had Barry with this week we had a good few pinks.

Hard luck Matt in not finding your first goose. Its amazing how they can vanish. Some years ago I dropped a pink that seemed dead 30 yards away on flat sand. When we sent the dogs looking for it shortly after there was no sign of it. After flight we spent an hour looking with 2 dogs with no luck until I looked down at my feet and there it was tucked into a tiny runnel. There were tracks from both dogs withing 3 feet of the goose yet they had not scented it.

Its a bit late now , but another time its worth waiting for the tide to come in and with luck it will flush the goose. I have sometimes found geese like this even on the following morning. Unless badly wounded i find greylags always run for it on hitting the ground wounded , but often ( not always ) pinks do not move far unless its an exposed place.

Matt, the goose you shot was caught on camera for around 1/2 a second. It went down exactly where we looked. I may well post another video featuring (very briefly) your goose. I have shot a few other pinks on film since the last video.

I blame my dog for you losing the goose. She is normally very good at marking birds that I shoot, but since I was off target she was looking the wrong way. I hate losing geese.

Your first picked foreshore goose won't be far away, i'm sure.
