Mentalmac
Hi guys, Quick question - Would a 12g single if fitted properly using 21g carts be too much for a 10 year old (tall for age and strong)? Or would it be too much?
FatFreddysCat
I would think 10 is a bit young for a 12g but If he's strong enough to hold it and already has shooting experience it maybe ok. The problem with a single is that they lack the weight of a double and therefore kick more.
bostonmick
At that age I would go for a twenty bore.light and not a big kick.and to be honest will do most anything a twelve will.lincoln do good o/u in twenty and not bundles of money.good luck
aris
My youngest is 9.5 - the problem with my 12g was the length and weight of the gun - let alone the recoil (not got to that point yet). If they're not comfortable with the gun, it could well put them off shooting all together. I think it may be best to start them with a junior gun shorter in length, weight, and recoil. 410 or a 28g if you are feeling flush.
welshwarrior
If the gun fit and balance are correct he should be ok think about the weight you don't want it to light as even with 21g the gun will recoil. There are better options but not many cheaper! Edited January 17, 2014 by welshwarrior
Mentalmac
The cost bit is my main issue haha. She is a dab hand with a airgun etc... And is a hardy thing (just swam 1500 metres at pool). She's thin but strong and very tall for age. I can get a single 12 for pea it's you see. Ill probably buy for myself for squirrels to go along with my O/U and rifle but wasn't sure if it would be too much for her. Perhaps I could shave a bit off butt and add a recoil pad? Looks like ill be putting in some time on second hand sights looking for smaller gauges :-)
FatFreddysCat
If you decide to go with the single 12. Try subsonic cartridges, they have a really low recoil.
HDAV
At that age a single 20 or 28 may be better but rarer stock would need cutting and that knackers the balance hatsan do a youth semi and wembley did an OU in 20 with 2 stocks short and normal, less mass equals more recoil! An Isis pad will help but gun needs to fit!

masmiffy
My mate just got a Hatsan Youth 20g semi Its light got 24" multichoke barrel and the stock is adjustable with spacers. Not a bad little gun with, I thought, minimal recoil. Poss a tad short for adult even with all the spacers in place but if you wanted to give it a go its shootable. deershooter
A single 12 will kick him to bits and put him off for life nothing wrong with a .410 with 14 gram 9 shot cartridges on the skeet range Deershooter
Ttfjlc
My 9 year old got a 28 bore sxs for Christmas, it came with an extension already fitted. It's a touch long so the extension is coming off, a weight being added plus recoil pad which will make it ideal. He's already shot with it how it is and managed to shoot 33 clays for 98 shots at grimsthorpe!

My elder son (a fairly tall and strong-ish lad) did a 'have a go' session at 12 years old with a 20g, and it knocked him about a fair bit and put him off, but i'm working hard on getting him back into it.... What I have now are a couple of gauge adapters from gaugemate.com - they are basically sleeves which allow you to use smaller gauge cartridges in your gun. In my case I got 12g-28g adapters but you can adapt from any size to any smaller size. They have no problem shipping to the UK too. That might be a solution if you want an inexpensive 12g. They are much cheaper than buying a new gun, and you can buy a 12-28, then a 12-20. This is assuming of course that the gun fits in the first place. HDAV
A single 12 cut down with 28 gauge adapter would be a cheaper and better option
Alfred
My lad is 10yrs old and actually a bit small for his age, he used my 12g game gun with 21g Comp X's in recently and did struggle with the length but if it had fitted him properly then it would be perfect for him. Its not the guage thats the issue, its the gun fit.

DEADLY PLUMBER
My son was of a similar age when he started but on the small side. He started with a single 410 however we found it was small and light. It lacked stopping power, good on rabbits. He crept pricking birds on the wing. So I stepped him up to a 20g. I went for the W&Scott junior with 2 stocks. 26" barrels, multi chokes & ejectors. Nice little gun. He is now 16 and still uses the same gun. He will need the longer stock fitted soon. Over the last 3 years he has increased the the cartridge shot load. He started with 21gr and now uses 28gr For pigeons and game. He uses 24gr for clays he finds 28gr too pokey for clays. Every 12g single I have ever used has kicked a lot. I think my son will step up to a 12g at about 18yrs. I like his 20g a lot I think I will keep it for when I get old and fancy something a bit lighter. ATB. DP
