washerboy
It's the length of the gun more then anything, my 12 isn't heavy just stocks too long

Westward
Small gauge guns generally have the same length stocks as 12s so the same applies. If he can handle a 12 why not get something like a Beretta 686 because It's easy to find a used 686/7 stock for non life threatening money and shorten it. Yes that sounds sensible, 12 gauge shells are also much cheaper than small bores and he'll grow up a bit soon enough anyway.
welshwarrior
Personally I'd look for a 20 bore on a true 20 bore action. It will hold its money even cut down and if you get something like a Lincoln or for a bit more a beretta you can get spare stock so you can use it as well. OddJob
I run a shoot at my school and, for such a chap, I'd be looking to use my 20g Beretta. As WelshWarrior said, you need something with a true 20g action to keep it light. Most young, small people struggle with the weight on the front arm. Having a light 20g action will help this. You can cut the stock and then add weights in to it to bring the centre of gravity towards the stock end, making it feel lighter in the front hand. The recoil is rarely too much of an issue with a 21g cartridge and some good advice on mounting the gun. A 410 will demoralise due to the small pattern/effort needed to hit targets. 28b are expensive to run and will essentially be a 20b mechanism but with thicker barrel walls on the whole, thus making it heavier.
