Fisherman Mike
First Questions. Are you buying private or through a dealer ? Edited February 18, 2014 by Fisherman Mike
casts_by_fly
In this country, cars must be insured, be road worthy, and must have had a tax paid for their use. Those three things are Insurance, MOT, and Road tax. Insurance is what you pay to a company (for an annual policy) should you wreck the car or someone wreck into you. MOT is an annual safety inspection that you will have to pay for. Road tax is an annual payment (now available as a monthly payment) that you give the government for the right to use your car on the roads (in essence). Once you buy the car, you get insurance. You can get quotes for the type of car you are looking at, but you don't buy it until you have the car. MOT happens on the same 1 year cycle, so if the car has been MOT'd last month, you don't have to do it for another 11 months. Road tax will be in the corner of the window that you see when it runs out (good until XXX 2014). If the MOT or road tax are not up to date, then ensure the seller MOT's the car and haggle over the price with/without road tax. rick
Fisherman Mike
Second Question do you have the reg number...if so use a insurance comparison site and get a quote before you commit to buy...thus avoiding any nasty shocks. michael68
And where do you do the mot or do inspectors come to see your caR.and I'm buying a second hand from private person
BRNDL
Take your car to a local MOT testing station, or call them in and book it in. If you car has no MOT, you must make the booking in advance as to show the law your intentions should you get pulled over. (I believe this to be true although happy to be corrected)
hushpower
I would not dream of buying a car without an MOT. 12 months MOT minimum i would want or would walk away., could cost you alot of money other wise.Buy from a reputable dealer or car super market.DONT set your heart on one particular car there are litteraly thousands of cars out there for sale
Livefast123
Make sure you take a mate with you to ensure that the car gets a second set of eyes over it and rose tinted disorder doesn't set it. redcloud
Have you passed the driving test? All these questions should have been covered during your driving lessons if you had a driving instructor worth his pay. Jaymo
Michael From your signature I have to ask were you born in 68? If so, at least age won't be against you when making your vehicle choice for insurance purposes. But your limited driving experience and lack of NCD will. So, best idea is use a comparison website such as go compare or money supermarket to name just a couple. But realise there are many many other comparable sites. Only then would I suggest purchase to avoid any shocks. How about getting any vehicle your interested in inspected by a local independent garage or the AA/RAC? Finally without being rude, if you are from 68 then how have you managed without a car so far? Or if your a newly qualified driver then how come this wasn't covered in your Theory Test? Thought it was? Edited February 18, 2014 by Jaymo

Fib new
Michael, your profile says you're 31 years old. Have you never owned a car before or have you moved to the UK recently? I'm not from the UK, but I know how this all works ín the UK -and I won't say I am the brightest spark around... I wouldn't go and buy a car only by the information obtained on pigeon watch -even when the info on this forum could be of help to you.
