four-wheel-drive
This reminds me of a question I always wanted to know the answer to. Who the heck thought that israel is in Europe? Israeli teams have been competing in European sports competitions for years... That is simple nobody else wants to have anything to do with them so we take pity on them and let then in you would have thought that the Americans would want them as they pay to keep them going but them perhaps that is the reason that they do it as it keeps them out of the US. Gimlet
What he said. The problem is the double standards the US and the UK have. They thin they can invade and bomb anyone they wish, despite the Security Council warning against any action taken, but when another country peacefully makes a legitimate effort to protect their population in another country they cry wolf. A slight case of hypocrisy I think... Precisely. This is why I bring up the issue of boundaries. This crisis has been caused by the EU. It is the most aggressively expansionist body in the modern world. For years it has been meddling in Ukraine trying to drive apart the Russian Slavic axis and expand beyond the political and cultural continental border onto the shores of the Black Sea. Ukraine is part of the Russian world. It needed to be left alone to evolve its own identity in co-operation with its neighbour. However unsavoury the weird Mr Putin and his crumbling socialist dictatorship may be it is the EU which has precipitated this crisis, not Russia. Once again, when conflict threatens, Europe is at the heart of it. Perhaps the best thing Putin can do is turn off the gas and drive Europe back to the dark ages so the rest of the world can have some peace. fortune
Didn’t I see on the 6 news that we appear to be suddenly back peddling on all of this? We disapprove of Russia’s actions but what we going to do about it? It was part of Russia up to the 50’s The population is mainly Russian. The Russians have military bases there. The Black sea fleet is operated from there The Russian Special Forces and regular troops are well dug in on the ground. The Russians have 150,000 troops just over the border. We on the other hand need trade and Europe needs Russian gas. We have sovereign bases on Cyprus and we are based in the Falklands protecting the local populations wishes and other outposts. So what is the difference in Russia being in Crimea? I’m sure that America would really be chuffed if Florida decided that it wanted to be allied to Russia or China and have them camped out on it’s back door. JDog
I am enjoying this thread, one which shows off some intellect and knowledge. For that reason I am unable to add my 'two pennyworth' except to say that I agree that the European Union is an expansionist organisation to rival anything that the Soviets could manage in peace time, and that Obama can only sabre rattle as the USA forces are stretched elsewhere (in fact every where) and the USA can gain very little from a conflict with Russia over Ukraine in terms of assets. Dead-Eyed Duck
Precisely. This is why I bring up the issue of boundaries. This crisis has been caused by the EU. Once again, when conflict threatens, Europe is at the heart of it. Perhaps the best thing Putin can do is turn off the gas and drive Europe back to the dark ages so the rest of the world can have some peace. Cobblers - this crisis has not been caused by the EU. It has been caused by over half of the population of the Ukraine (seeing themselves as being 'European', like the Poles etc) wanting closer relationships with the EU and the west.. Unfortunately due to Russian past politics in the days of the USSR, they had ceded the Crimea to be part of the now Ukraine; the population which think themselves as being Russian. Also, quite rightly, the Russians do not want to lose naval bases in the Crimea.... So we have the western part of the Ukraine wanting to go 'West', and the eastern part wanting to go back to the Russian sphere of influence. It is obvious that the previous Ukrainian head of state wanted closer ties with Russia (he was in Putin's pocket) and the majority of the western population of Ukraine wanting none of it. So, they threw him out. The EU Being expansionist? - of course it is! You have EU MP's wanting more influence, and the one way they can get more power is to enlarge the EU (not rocket science is it?). If you were a EU politician sat in your armchair in Brussels contemplating the future of the world, you would see the main power blocks being the USA, China, The EU, Russian etc., etc. The larger the block, the greater the influence on world affairs. Fairly basic stuff. The only thing in favour of the EU is that new member states have to democratically vote to join, and then await to see if their application will be accepted. Whether some like it or not the formation of the EU has prevented the endless succession of European wars that have cost millions of lives. No conglomeration of nations can be perfect by the very nature of the mix of nationalities; their own ambitions, and scheming politicians. Would you like to be German, subsidising the likes of Greece and Italy?

Ukrainians and the Tartars of Crimea do not love Russia but Russia needs the Ukraine for its wheat and Crimea for it's Black sea ports.
