Rotary dilemma

Starting to get fed up with the rotary, I tend only to use it on the odd occasion I can get the motor within 100mtrs of the hide.Plus i tend to spend more time faffing on with it and moving it around. The rotary its self isn't heavy but the battery is.As I,m getting on a bi and I want lighter gear. The full bodied decoys have gone and replaced with fuds.Has anybody replaced their rotary for a flapper or two?or have you kept the rotary for back up?

I make two trips as the gun is locked up in the truck, so I take the heavy stuff first and then the bulky kit...A hundred yards is a short walk!

25 cartridges weigh around a kilo so too shoot a 100 pigeons the average shot will need 8+ kg of shells.

A 100 pigeons will be close to 50 kg....

Not that you have to shoot a hundred pigeons, however I don't know many people who would stop while the birds are piling in because they will have to make a few trips back to the truck....

You don't need lots of kit too shoot pigeons, however they do react to movement and that come with a weight price and it is no good being where you want to be and not where the birds are.

I still don't know why so many people have problems with magnets. I find that I am 99% successful with them. They are often blamed for scaring birds away when it is probably something else that is turning the pigeons. I sometimes have to change the position of the magnet, but it's very, very rare that I take it in altogether.

Hi Davyo

I started with a rotary and stuck with it for the best part of a year but on all but one occasion I ended up taking it in and replacing with floaters.

I now only use shells and two hyperflaps as floaters, which are great

There will be numerous shooters who swear by rotarys, but, if they don't work for you, you might as well save lugging the extra weight

Good luck

Get something to carry your gear in or on. I have a fishing trolley and box. The box is my seat and inside is two nets 12 fuds 2 batteries clamps for holding the nets for windy days. Hide poles, cartridges and rotary are strapped above the box with bungee strap. All I carry is my gun. Stick the decoys out in your chosen pattern. Personally I stick the magnet about 20 yards to my left so the pigeons see both the rotary and decoys. It's then left to them. Both options the birds should be in range. I find it easier to shoot birds right to left hence the reason the magnet goes to my left.

I use a 12V 7amp battery that lasts more than 8 hours with hypaflaps on the rotary and that doesn't seem too heavy.

My weight/bulk reduction is all shells and no fullbodied decoys and ONLY take what I am going to use.

Leave all extra bits back in the motor, you can always go back and get them if necessary during the day.,

I think different rotaries can have a very different drain on power. I had an original "pigeon magnet" and with even the biggest batteries it wouldn't last for more than around 3-4 hours. Needless to say I upgraded to a different lighter model which is a lot less draining on a battery. I too use a 12v 7amp battery which isn't too bad to carry around.

I tried a lighter rotary from a1 decoys but it fell to bits after 3 outings, so had to modify it which added weight.Think I will look at a diff battery( one I use at the moment is a 17ah 12v which is big and heavy)

Also using a 12v 7ah that I got from Toolstation. Not too bad to carry, but chuck in a few 1.5v's for the flappers and it starts to add up.

I was using Hypaflaps on the rotary, but have found the recent windy weather just bends their wings back and knackers them. Even with double rods. Have switched to dead birds on the rotary and put the Hypaflaps out on a couple of bouncers where I reckon they are deadly.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have 2 magnets i only take 1 most times in the motor, some times i have taken both and put them out but if i have to walk i leave them in the motor and take a flapper and a couple of my floaters. :good:

Gone are the days that i will lug a lot of weight across the fields I'm getting to old and the ashma doesn't help.. :sad1:
