kennett
Evening all, have an old truck to use for feeding and stuff on the shoot that I want to register for limited use, will be kept off road and only needs to cross the road really. How do I go about changing its road tax class and does it still need insurance?

How do I go about changing its road tax class and does it still need insurance? apply online to dvla or get form from PO for limited use, I think your restricted to 5km of road use and should only use on road to get from one field to another, the vehicle will need to be road worthy and you can get agricultural insurance you don't have to pay road tax or have a MOT and can use red diesel
Medic1281
Looking at dvla website you'd be restricted to 1,5km, which really isn't far!!

Medic1281
I wish mine were, I got excited when you said 5km, I could've got away with that!
Imperfection
A company i once worked for had an old (but strangley had very low use) Volvo FL18 tractor unit which was taxed just for hauling unloaded trailers to the MOT test centre 25 miles away so there should be some sort of provisions within the law for what you require. Have to add that the truck was that old it didnt have a speed limiter and without trailer was the fastest HGV i've ever driven!
islandgun
There is a grey area here, your truck for all intents and purposes becomes a tractor, yet you are only able to to use the truck for 1.5 km road use whereas a tractor can be driven as much as wanted ( I drove a tractor as a contractor and did hundreds of miles)
kennett
The distance isn't a problem, we have landies at work on limited use so knew about the 1.5k rule and that will be plenty, but can't find any mention of needing proof of any kind of insurance on the dvla website, do I need it? Take the number plates off What about that trick they learnt you at school . Look left look right . When it's clear . Drive across !? Just a thought
shoot and be safe
With the 1.5km, is that a radius of a central point or the maximum distance you can drive between each gate?
Medic1281
The way it reads is between gates.
the enigma
Yep, you need insurance. If I remember right, you have to produce it when changing tax class, and getting a new tax disc.
thepasty
so these distance limits of 5, 1.5km or whatever it is, is that per trip, week, year or what? Edited May 15, 2014 by thepasty
the enigma
I'm pretty certain it's 1.5km between pieces of land. So if you leave one field you can travel a maximum of 1.5km to et to the next field.
