CROWS ON THE GRASS

well after non stop sorting the patio out and back garden , my shooting buddy decided to give me a break(with the wifes permission ) and take me out for an afternoon on Wednesday at a perm we had not shot for a few weeks,,

he said the farmer had rang and he had planted corn on two fields and spread muck on the field between the two corn fields ready for the plough,

we set off early and when we arrived had a good scout round and noticed the crows where on the muck field, as soon as we arrived they where off so we watched for about an hour and they where landing down the bottom end and where all using the same flight line in and out,

I decided to set up under a tree out the sun and to the side of where they where entering the field and my buddy set up the other side under another tree, I put 5 decoys out pretty well spread and waited,

for two hours nothing arrived as they all lifted once we walked onto the field, after 2 hours they started to drift back in one,s and two,s,

I was using 71/2 carts and was taking out some nice birds with them and was quite surprised how well they where dropping the crows out to 35-40yrds through a 3/4 and full choke.

we stayed for 5 hours and I ended up with 38 crows 5 jackdaws and two woodpigeons, I was gutted we couldn't stay longer as we had to be back because the wife was working and I was babysitting the kids,

my buddy ended up with 44 crows and 6 jacksaws but no pigeons so the farmer was very happy indeed,

just goes to show what you can get with a last minute call up and a few hours out

heres a pic of my bag

Sounds like a good trip out Bob bet you enjoyed that.

whats the gun?

its a 1974 eibar jabe sxs 28inch barrels, 3/4 and full choke,,

its a cracking little light gun and is perfect for rough shooting, since my shooting bud used it he,s gone out and bought himself a sxs and is over the moon with it

cheers Bob

Great read .... good shooting !!

hi bob

did you use the diy crow decoys you made?

hi lee yes mate I used the homemade ones , they take up no room in your bag mate and so simple to use so a big thanks goes to Steve b Wales for showing me how to build them,

they do work excellent bud

Well done , a good bag.

I have always found 7.5 shot perfectly adequate for crows as well as pigeon.

yes mate ,,I normally use 6,s 30g but I have found the 7 1/2s work as well but save you a packet,

I have been trying the hull superfast no 6s 29g and have to say I found no difference so 7 1/2s it is from now

I've been using the same Hulls in mine Bob. Half and full choke sxs, found holes in pattern so going back to 7.5s when I run out this week.

Who do you use evo for sourcing your cartridges ... bit limited for choice on the Wirral .. cheers

my shooting buddy normally orders a 1000 at a time and we split the cost, just makes life easier, your welcome to a box or two to try out mate if ya want to call round for them,

paul they seem a punchy little cartridge at 29g but they where no better than the 7 1/2s I was using, as long as I let them come in over the decoys they stopped them dead in there tracks, my shooting buddy had some great long shots though with the super fast,

have to say I do like the 32g eley pigeon 6 1/2s cant fault them and they pattern superb in my gun

What l might do if you didnt mind ! ... is having a look at your home made crow decoys Bob. .... see what it entails. ... lve a few cartridges at present. Was wondering whether to stick with the 5's & 6's regards Crows/Magpies. I've always been of the opnion, 7.5's are a clay cartridge, full stop.

That said, lm frequently prove wrong on a variety of points lol ... l normally get hold of a slab at a time. And have a few boxes of others few 3" steel, some standard steel cartridges etc " ... going by your post/pics, trying the 7.5's would be prudent on my part ... cheers

I,ll put one in with your kit lee, just draw round it on some ply mate ,paint them with matt black paint and watch them come in bud,

they work better than my full bodied ones
