Dave-UK
Firstly I would like to than Mick (Harnser) for taking the time out to show a complete novice the art of pigeon shooting. Mick didn’t just didn’t take me shooting, he explained all the aspects of what and why we were doing things. The day started when I arrived at Micks house. As I only drive a saloon car and a 4x4 was definitely necessary. We set off from Micks house at 1000hrs. After a good hour of driving around various stubbles we set up hide, put out a pigeon magnet and plenty of pigeon decoys. A few pigeons were interested and taken – it was very quiet. Mick did say we were a little early in the day. After a while, Mick drove me around to a few more fields. After seeing plenty of pigeons just sitting on the ground, we decided to set up the hide again. As the hours progressed pigeons began to feed and were attracted to the magnet and the decoys My choke set up on my Beretta was wrong, but as I brought all my chokes that was easily rectified. Next was my cartridges,. I was using clever 7.5’s 28g. These were ineffective so Mick gave me a box of his Eley High Flyer number 6 32g cartridges – these were very effective. I was using a Beretta 686E Evo o/u Mick was using a Beretta semi-automatic. Using the o/u was a little awkward due to the size of the hide, so on my list is a good semi-automatic. Mick even had a spray can of mosquito repellent which was needed. In total we bagged 17 pigeons. This number would have been over double if I’d hit more consistently but this being the first time I’d shot something that flies instead of clays I was happy. All in all I learnt a great deal about pigeon species, decoying, staying still and showing no movement as the birds come in to commit to the decoys. All in all it was a wonderful experience with a guy that really knows his stuff and has over 30 years of shooting experience. I look forward to expanding my knowledge and understanding of shooting pigeons. The pigeons were taken home, after watching several you tube videos I removed the breasts and had fresh pigeon for dinner the next day. A first for my wife and I but won’t be the last. The rest of the breasts are in the freezer! Thank you again Mick for taking the time to demonstrate, explain and pass on your vast amount of knowledge to a complete newbie. What chokes were you using? Dave is a compleat novice and has only been shooting since may this year . He was shooting 28 gram seven and a half clay cartridges . I thought that he would do better with a heavier load of no 6 shot . When he changed shells he started to bring some nice birds down with some nice clean kills . I know some pigeon shooters will shoot seven and a half ,but I think they are a bit on the light side . Harnser
Harnser
I enjoyed daves company and it was a pleasure to take him out for the day . Dave was very keen to learn the ropes and I am sure he will make a good pigeon shooter . It would appear that I am again responsible for getting another normal sound person addicted to the wonderful sport of pigeon shooting . Dave has served his country in the parachute regiment for 22 years and has served in some very nasty places through out the world . Thought it would be nice to give him a day out pigeon shooting . Sorry dave . Harnser

JDog
Yes good on both of you, Harnser the teacher and Dave the pupil. I notice that Harnser referred to 'another normal sound person getting addicted to pigeon shooting'. That cannot be right surely? None of the pigeon shooters I know fit that description. I know what you mean JDOG . Pigeon shooters normally start off as fairly normal people . After they have gained their first permission they then tend to slide into being cantankerous , secretive ,obsessive and tend to spend to much money on pigeon shooting . They will argue to the death about best cartridges for pigeons ,the best choke ,the best semi auto ,the best cammo net and are forever driving around the country side looking over the hedges for pigeons . Proberbly the worst thing that happens to them is that they spend to much time on pigeon watch . Harnser
