A good deed.

One morning last week I went into the open fronted cart shed and discovered that two of the second brood swallow chicks had committed suicide and were lying dead on the floor. I suppose that is nature but it is upsetting nevertheless.

The following day a third chick had attempted the same thing and it was on the ground 15' below the next. Luckily it was still alive but very cold and I got the ladders out and placed it back in the nest next to it's two siblings. My hopes for it were not high.

Today the parents were frantically feeding all three chicks so the rescued one had survived.

Recently, I found a young song thrush hopping down my back lane. I caught it and it seemed okay, just a little big young to fly. I contacted RSPB, they were not interested, then I contacted RSPCA, only to get a pre recorded message, and again, not interested. I then contacted my local vet and asked if they new anyone in my area who takes in wild birds until they can fly. To my amazement, they gave me a name and number - Caerphilly Bird Rescue. I phoned them, and a very nice guy turned up two hours later and took the bird. He said that a good helping of meal worms will help it, and it should be flying within a week. I gave him £15.00 towards his costs. He contacted me 10 days later to say that the bird had flown.
