The Mighty Prawn
Hi all my first day of my first season in my first syndicate is looming next sat (4th) and so off to the toyshop tomorrow for supplies. I've still got a slab of 32g 5's from a day out last season so I'm sorted for the pheasants but need to pick up some steels for the duck drive. What size do you guys advise for mallard driven off ponds? I know you can come up a size or even two for steel so are we looking at 3's or 4's as that seems massive for a little greenhead? thanks in advance for all the conflicting advice which is about to come... Guest cookoff013
3s fine, maybe even 4s, as shots may be close.
Guest topshot_2k
I would go for some 32g No. 4, I have used RC Steel and Express supreme steel and both were good. If you have 3" gun and there may be geese then go for 36g No.
birdsallpl
5's in steel will be fine for driven pond flighting, or a bit larger, both will be OK
Scully
I shoot Gamebore Super steel 32grm 3's and SAGA 32grm 3's through 1/4 or 1/2. Both do the job very well.
The Mighty Prawn
Cheers gents, much appreciated Serious answers out of the way we can commence silliness - I do have a box of solid slugs which will require better accuracy but I'm reliably informed will kill a mallard! figgy
Any 3 or 4 shot size cart from one of the big names will be fine. Figgy
dodeer
RC 32g 3's. Advice is to go down 2 shot sizes with steel.

RossEM
Steer clear of the new Remington Nitro Steel cartridges, they are crud. Go for Express 4's - I've been using them for years on flight-pond duck and they're great.

Go for Express 4's - I've been using them for years on flight-pond duck and they're great. As far as i know there are two types ones from USA and ones loaded for EU market and they have different packaging. The ones I have are from the US and are by far the best steel loads I have used. DazzJo
Well I've gone for Eley VIP Bismuth this time size 5 32g no problem £32 per 25 though :(

Used some on pigeons last week and I'm not a fan - on geese I used to use Remington Nitro BBs in my old 10 bore which were, like you say, the best. Until I can get some of the old Remmington, Express are fine for me & a lot cheaper.

The Mighty Prawn
Went with Eley VIP steel 3's at £62 for a slab so not too awful, just got to hit something now! Think 250 should see me through this season and probably the next as there's only 300 ducks down

Just forget what you know about lead and do what your told by people who shoot steel at duck 3s and 4s. I of course don't personally shoot duck chased off ponds
hoggysreels
Its an aspect of shooting that doesnt appeal to me either .. l take the odd random one, always in full flight overhead. I go for the drakes ... if there isnt enough time to descriminate from gender, the safety remains on .. each to their own, its a practice l decided on doing 18 months or so ago. Though my success rate is quite low. My satisfaction level on the odd occssion l have success is immense ..
