30-6
One of my pet hates is empty cartridge cases left behind after a shoot (can't see any excuse apart from laziness to not pick them up). When I finally get around to getting the .22 rimfire, how do I pick up the empty ejected cases, or is it just not a feasable option when out in the field? Serious question, anybody got any comments, or IS it best to leave them there and watch the metal detector brigade dig holes.
bobt
I try to pick up most empties, the 22 rims do seem to dissapear in long grass though.
stevethevanman
the 22 rims do seem to dissapear in long grass though. I want to know the answer to this as well, because on some of my premision there are livestock and horses in the areas were I shoot rabbits with my 22lr, as they just walk around just munching the ground, I am frightened they will pick up a empty case, I always try my best to pick up the cases, every shooter should but sometimes as you said they just dissapear in the grass

Axe
Normally I cup my hand round the ejection port before ejecting the round, job done. Even when multiple loading I always pick up the empties. Mind you theres always one that cant be found. Be warned, don't drop a live one on the deck, you could be there alnight looking for it!! Poacher
I always collect every bit of brass from my .22 however i have the bonus of bolt action. I wouldn't want to risk a cow/sheep/horse choking on the bloody thing, which wouldn't do anyone any favours  :o
Peter_HMR
Dont suppose brass is magnetic  would make it an awful lot easier if you had a big magnet but from what i can remember its just copper and zinc so non ferrous. kirky640
firstly not much chance of a cow or sheep etc choking on .22 spent shell i never pick up any as they are so small they would be impossable to find in croped or grass kirkys top tip is when shooting from a vehicle with semi auto 1 cover heater vent along the botton of the windscreen with a cloth or towel to stop the emptys going down there 2 alway shoot from passengers side and the vehicle will catch the shells i always pick up shotgun shells and put in bin tho kirky

il cacciatore
I try and pick them up but as they said they get lossed in long grass. Shotgun carts I always pick up but sometimes even green ones get lossed in the grass too!
Edward
I have a martini actoin .22 rifle and I put my hand over it when I open it. if I do drop one in long grass where livestock is I just try to press it in about where they fell. it just takes too long to tri and find it. Hunter
The ejector srping popped out of my Sako ages ago, the cases pop out on there own if I clip the bolt back with a small snap. But otherwise I can open the bolt and pull the case out with my finger. Take them home and recycle them at the local shooting club brass bin. (its their main income) Have lost a couple of cases because I always make sure my quarry is down before looking for a case.
