chipper
Hi chaps, Got given a new 12g leather cartridge belt, the cartridges are a very tight fit (obviously because its new). Besides from using the belt regularly to add a bit of wear and tear, Was wondering if anyone has any tips to loosen the grip of the leather loops. cheers
The Mighty Prawn
You could beat it with a mallet, soften the leather up which naturally stretches it a bit but it will loosen up pretty quickly from normal use
deadeye18
Rub some dubbin or neatsfoot oil onto the loops while theyre full of cartridges and leave for a few days.theyll soon soften and strech.
Dunkield
If you wet it slightly and put cartridges in that will make it 'give' a bit. I wouldn't overdo it though as it may go too far.

wymberley
Just a tip for what it's worth; if you've not used one before and you intend to carry a gun and the belt will not be under a jacket, their use can be one way of damaging a stock. Jay_Russell
Prob a stupid question but does one wear it with the buckle at the front or back?
wymberley
Prob a stupid question but does one wear it with the buckle at the front or back? A very good question which shows good thinking. At the back makes a lot of sense. However, depending on right/left hand, starting with the buckle at the front and then rotating a not too tight belt as you use up those where your loading hand naturally falls is the best option - other than a cartridge bag that is - see Post #
Scully
I'm with Wymberley on this one. A proper leather cartridge belt is a thing of beauty but if you're not careful they can make some horrendous marks on a stock. When new they are so tight you can't get out a cartridge, and once well worn you can empty one by simply getting over a stile. Nephew had an elasticated loop one when he was a lad, which seemed to work well, but you've still got to watch that woodwork.
Big Al
Prob a stupid question but does one wear it with the buckle at the front or back? I always fasten the buckle normally and spin it around to the back.

tedster
You need two really, one over each shoulder and crisscrossed over your chest. Wear with a suitable bandana, not a tweed one tho!
