Flu Jab yes or no?

I had my first flu jab about 40 years ago when I was at university so that flu did not interrupt my studies, and was promptly laid out for a week by the side effects.

I then avoided them for about the next 25 years, despite a bad dose of flu in my 30's.

About 15 years ago my GP, a very comely lass (although that had no influence on my decision :) ), advised that modern vaccines had few, if any, side effects - so I had the jab again, and have continued with it and the pneumonia jab with no problems ever since.

I've had proper influenza twice and now will do all I can to never have it again... since having the flu jab I havent had it and am quite happy to have the jab just in case it stops me getting it.... The last time I had influenza I could barely stand for 5 days.

Oh and I've never had adverse effects from the jab.

I wouldn't get them.

I genuinely believe they do more harm than good. If you are eating well and taking your vitamins you shouldn't need vaccines.

You've clearly never had the flu. Taking vitamins has nothing to do with contracting the flu virus for normally nourished people.

If someone is otherwise fit and healthy with a perfectly functioning immune system then the risk of contracting flu is not nearly so severe, however for those who are immune deficient through illness, age, medication, etc then it presents a very real threat.

What does that really say about medication then? If it suppresses your immune system you're surely off better without it.

I can't speak for every medication and there is maybe a great case in there to support what you say. In my case being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis relatively young was that if it wasn't for the medication I would be crippled now, but the flip side is that it suppresses the immune system.

RA is an autoimmune disease that actually causes the body to attack itself, so to combat that the drugs reduce the immune systems ability to do that. Regrettably I have bad prognostic markers so on quite a strong dose of the medication.

I didn't appreciate quite how compromised my immune system was, I have never been a sickly person and shrugged off colds, etc. Earlier this year I caught what was a mild cold for most people and it flattened me for weeks, really pretty scary. So flu vaccine for me.

The same drugs are used in cancer therapies, etc.

You're right. But of course that's the whole point of a treatment for an autoimmune condition ie to suppress the immune system attacking its own body. Getting the balance right is the trick.

Absolutely and regrettably it does involve relying on other medications to offset some of the side effects. As advanced as our medical capability is just now for some things, in so many other cases the treatment is still a fairly blunt approach.

I would rather be where I am just now though than riddled with pain and crippled so no complaints from me.

I have never had any kind of jab for anything in my LIFE, my mother said when i was 17, I would be old enough to make my own mind up. we were sent down the street to measles and mumps parties, so i copt for the lot when I was young.Whooping cough, jaundice, every type of measles going ,I got um all, I still believe that pumping loads of chemicles and foreign bodies into your system is not a good idea. Natural immunity for me, but each to his own from Auntie.

Then you should try Dr Sherry Tenpenny, she has some interesting things to say about vaccines and that IS from a medical professional who probably knows more about vaccines than me or you.

Would you follow the same ideology for polio or smallpox? What about TB?

It is all about risk, of course for every vaccine developed and administered there will always be a risk of some unintended and unfavourable consequence, but when considered against the risks of the disease itself they are tiny in comparison.

Yes I would.

Interesting. With respect I think you are completely off your rocker in that regard. Strong feelings against flu vaccines I can understand, but the efficacy of the vaccines against polio, smallpox and TB is incredible and advanced human health and wellbeing hugely.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course and I respect that.

ive had the flue once and that was enough to make me realise that its not a joking matter.

i was bedridden for a week. i hope i never have to experience anything like it ever again.

my partner at the time did her best to not catch it, but she ended up with i too. my daughter was 5 months old at the time so went to stay with my parents as soon as it was noticed that my ex was coming down with it, but it was too late. she became seriously ill and due to her immune system using every ounce of its worth to combat it, it missed the meningitus.

she passed away suddenly not long after, but thats another story for another time.

if its free mate, take the jab.

Rubbish vaccines have saved millions of lives over the years, polio for example has being eradicated in most countries because of vaccines. I am just glad that this is an internet forum and hopefully most people have the sense not to take views like yours seriously. Its simple if you don't want to get the flu, get the jab, if you are happy to take a chance doint.
