I have found FUDs to be more attractive to pigeons than shells. I bought 6 last year ,used them at seed time and twice on stubble, so maybe 10 outings in total. I was amazed when buying a further half dozen to see how much faded the first six were in comparison. Big advantage for me is they are more stable in strong winds than shell decoys. Downside they take a little more time to set up from fully folded position.

I think you might find they are a different batch. They are produced in different shades.

When not using real birds I think FUD's work very well. My only gripe was the heavy red ground spike and the limitation in height off the ground, so I took those off and made my own spikes; Now much easier to carry and I have different height spikes to cope with any crop height. They also turn into the wind similar to sillosocks and have a little movement on them when using longer spikes.

I don't quite get the cut 1cm off the steel to enable them to go back on, but I am a bit thick so apologies in advance......

I think your whole idea of them on spikes without the big steel bar is FAB :good:

I am sure cosd will correct me if I have this wrong ....

I think he is saying that Instead of just cutting right through middle of the Steel spike to remove it you should cut out a section on one side of the spike large enough to slide the fixing holding the top of the fud together through the gap created in the spike. Then if needed at some point you could put back on. Hope that makes sense.

Clever thinking! cosd did you ever try differant thickness or metal in rods? 1mm dia rod would be quite soft and would bend easy?

You gut through there section that slides and remove the whole red spike, the u bent on his rods pushed on to the middle stud that the red spike was fixed too.In my case the spring rod.I didn't remove my rods, i just folded it into the tail when packed away.

Spot on for the spikes.

Regards the rods, I now own a set of electronic calippers so ill measure them tomorrow.

1mm does sound a little thin and they are reasonably strong. Probably my guess of thickness is wrong.

I used mine for around three years now and they are still going strong.

I use some 1mm wire from a 99p garden windmill thingy shaped as Cosd has said and with the fud's metal spike removed , the wire wound and taped to again 99p thin tent pegs with the ends removed or suitable wood dowel or similar,

Using different length wire gives a softer or stiffer reaction to wind.

cosd - Please don't go to any trouble. Just wondered if the 1mm chosen thickness came about after experimentation or this is what you had hanging around in the shed

I have Now got some 1,1.5 and 3mm rod and will have a play on flexibility with thickness and height.

Thanks again for re posting the mod

All the best
