spready
Was out today, shooting rooks and crows on the sheep fields, had my fair few and a great days sport, what was wondering , how many of you when shooting jackdaws seem to drop them out the sky and then have them run off only for the dog to chase them down and bring them back. i was dropping crows dead in the air so know its not my shooting (well hope not) . I was using half choke with either 32g 5 or 6s through my semi auto. any ideas?
kiffy
ive had it , but then i would have thought all of us had... thankfully not to mane as the trouble i have is we dont take a dog when on crows / pigeons so me or my mate either put another one in if its safe and their close enough or we run like an idiot with a priest in the hand to hand despatch is wierd at times when the fold up and drop like a brick then come to and run on
spready
All I'm thinking is they are small and just manage to squeeze through the patten and pick up one or two shots, rather than the whole patten
motty
If they are running off, then that means you are not hitting them correctly. I prefer a size 7 for most of my shooting. More pellets = more strikes.
spready
you use 7's with crows? how do you find them mate?
JDog
There is not much to a Jackdaw under the feathers.
motty
I kill crows very well with size sevens. I don't know why a lot of people think there is a need to go bigger at normal ranges, ie up to 50 yards.
Cyrus1988
I've had it once before were I shot the Jackdaw and it landed right in front of the hide, not over exaggerating but it must of been about 4 minutes later it jumped up and started running off. I don't know why a lot of people think there is a need to go bigger at normal ranges, ie up to 50 yards. Plenty of people would not agree with you motty. I think there are a lot of people (myself included) who would not use anything other then 30 or 32 grams of 5 or 6. However given the amount of shooting and success you have a mere mortal like myself would not want to criticise..
Suffolkngood
If you prefer 30 or 32 gr loads then #7 will give you a very dense pattern. If they'll drop a pheasant stone dead then surely they'll do the same with corvIds?
WelshMike
...and so the debate starts...Just preference in my case as I have had better results with 32 gram 5s and 6s on the crows and not as good results with 32 gram 7s. Just my opinion which fortunately (as its an opinion) cant be wrong

I would be in the 7's camp, I've always used 7's for my decoying, as long as the ranges are kept sensible then they will be sufficient. I can only speak as I find, after a lot of experience of using the aforementioned shot size. I am certainly not saying that folk who use something different are doing anything wrong. aga man
Shot these Corvids last week over decoys with no7 in 28gms the blue case were 24 gm. They still killed well. I used 3/4 choke.
Caravanman
Used half choke with the 7's and full choke with the 5.5's, both 28g. Full/5.5 worked better through my gun. Edited March 13, 2015 by Caravanman
dougall
agree with jdog, jackdaw is a pretty small body supporting a beak...anywhere near centre pattern of whatever size shot they should fall over. Occasional runners happens you just had one of them days.
Nmb
I shot 21 crows with 32 gram 7 gamebores today. Really liked them and only two had to be dispatched. Must say I usually use blackgold 32gram 5s however I might continue with the 7's Nick
Bluebarrels
I use 7 1/2s 28g for all corvid decoying, plenty of shell at decoying ranges BB Edited March 24, 2015 by Bluebarrels
