fenboy
Who knew builders had handbags Quite , thanks for all the replies , I did not know such a simple thing could be made so complicated . As I have now had plenty of suggestions could the squabbling stop thank you !
JDog
Cor this has got complicated hasn't it? Just put a slab of ready mix down and cover it with parquet flooring. It's what your dog deserves.
pegleg31
Slightly change the subject, out of interest what are you covering the concrete with?
leeds chimp
You need a bit of labour to mix it let me know... also got two bags of sand and cement left over from the last job
LondonLuke
Slightly change the subject, out of interest what are you covering the concrete with? The above chaps would probably suggest 1mm decorative coating with 1mm self absorbing self adhesive layer with water based actuation properties Or wallpaper in anyone else's terms (Yes this answer was written for (attempted) comedic effect, I am aware a wallpaper base to a dog run isn't suited) Edited March 19, 2015 by LondonLuke
timps
I bow to your superior knowledge of interior domestic screeds but to be blunt I've forgotten more about BS 8500 than most people will ever know.. I must have specified and purchased over a half a million cubic metres of premixed concrete and screed in the last 40 years as well, so I think I'm qualified to post a little bit about it. I never raised an issue with Cem I or II OPC.... you did.! its just totally unnecessary for this situation. OPC is available in 25 KG bags at any Builders Merchant in the world. Like I said 1:4 all in, or concreting sand at 1:4 on a well consolidated hardcore bed will do the job ( in my experience ) Just don't make the mix too wet or it will shrink as it cures. Also I never suggested a 100mm concreting sand mix would be better at all. This is a simple garden slab and you have completely missed the point. Just by a couple of tonne bags of aggregate and cement and get it laid ...then Timps can come around and wave his willy at it, dip it in and test it. I've answered the OPs question £175 tops. WE are making a mountain out of a mole hill....RC 35, Air entrained, what next caltite to keep the dog **** out.? By the way I have a 18 year old 100mm concrete screed in my back garden which I mixed myself....its still as good today as it was then, albeit its reinforced with 2 layers of chicken wire. back at ya The trouble is you are specifying a domestic floor screed if just using “concrete sand”, if you had specified a premix concrete we would not be discussing this as that contains coarse aggregate. I must have tested more cubic meters of concrete than you have specified so what does my childish statement prove over your childish statement. The geunuine point I am making though is you will have to use too much water in mixing at 100 mm thick just using sand and it will shrink causing shrinkage cracks. This is the issue I have with it: “Where the thickness of the levelling screed is 50 mm or greater, consideration should be given to the use of fine concrete to minimize water demand and hence drying shrinkage”. So when he removes the curing sheet he can thank you for the crazy paving look because he just used sand. Guaranteed to happen no: Greatly increased likelihood YES If you had suggested a fine concrete not screed I would have kept quiet. As a side: OPC stands for Ordinary Portland Cement which is Portland Cement and up to 5% of Minor additional constituents, this is a CEM I 42.5. anything other than this is NOT OPC it is known as a Portland Composite Cement. OPC was the only cement available a few years back and a single strength class so people used mix designs of 4 to 1 etc. it’s now all changed. CEM II is not OPC it is Portland Composite cement, a blended cement and can vary from manufacturer with up to 35% filler hence why it is not classed or sold as OPC. 4 to 1 with CEM II is not the same as 4 to 1 OPC (which doesn’t vary), you might have to add up to 10% or more CEM II to get the equivalent 4 to 1 OPC mix. So telling someone 4 to 1 mix OPC then expecting them to find OPC in 25 KG bags is my point. So no OPC is not readily available but CEM II Portland Composite cement is and depending on the blend 4 to 1 might not be enough.. Yep it is only a dog kennel who cares, probably the poor bloke who has spent a day laying it. But as you say back at you Edited March 19, 2015 by timps

Konnie
Fenboy, think you need to specify how much your dogs will weigh, to calculate a formula. If we were on the marsh think there is a bit of overkill here. oops sorry Edited March 19, 2015 by Konnie

JDog
But the colour is all important. How about yellow to signify your 'Yellow belliedness?'

pegleg31
How much is that a tin? Epoxy is about £90. I haven't seen what you're considering, what ever you use prime the concrete with SBR first.

I haven't seen what you're considering, what ever you use prime the concrete with SBR first. Its about £70 for 5ltr , I will have to wait to read the instructions before I apply SBR as lots of the specialist finish paints say do not seal the concrete . pegleg31
I'd still seal with SBR no matter what they say. Most primers are SBR based and it'll help stop the paint flaking. Not seen the rubber one though. Edited March 19, 2015 by pegleg31

scotslad
I'm looking at puting a decent run in this year i there any simple additives u can add to the mix? Planning to hand mix it. Prob going to be 3x15m ish Be interested in how ur paint holds up, to be honest i've never heard of any treatment thats really worth doing, all will wear and some surprisingly quickly with the dogs claws. Have u spoke to the sellers/retailers to ask if it's suitable and hardwearing? Just planning to leave it finished smooth concrete, good enough for plenty of farm sheds and silage pits

Just planning to leave it finished smooth concrete, good enough for plenty of farm sheds and silage pits Well its sold as kennel and dairy floor paint so I would like to think its up to the job , the trouble is that even sealed concrete will eventually let urine etc seep in and it eventually starts to smell Ceramic tiling is another but more expensive option
pegleg31
Where Abouts in Lincolnshire are you fenboy?. A good friend imports tiles so I get them at a very good rate which I'm happy to pass onto you if it helps. Russ
fenboy
Thanks. I am about a hour from Lincoln on the Norfolk border. I am going to try the paint out first and see how that stands up , if it does not wear well I will then think about tiling . I am not in no rush with the kennel , i will get the base down this spring / summer and then the Kennel sometime over the winter , next spring , unless something turns up I cannot say no too I am not planning on another dog until next spring / summer.
