Bobba
Another 20 bore fan here. I've two. My favourite is the Miroku MK 60 30" barrels which I had multi choked by Nigel Teague. For pigeons, ducks, rabbits and clays it does all I ask of it. Those who keep up the monotony of saying they're for women and children and not a Mans gun are simply the modern day version of a Luddite. welshwarrior
Nothing to do with power all to do with size and fit look up shotgunlife.com and women and shotguns that gives an appropriate answer basically a 12 bore is made to fit a man a 20 bore is for a woman or a small man or a teen You must be have a joke. Have a look at the dimensions on paper they are identical in reality the drop on the 20s is slightly more than a 12 bore, women and children have high cheek bones than men therefore the 20 would be more likely to fit a man than woman. Lucky Shot 1958
I am fortunate enough to have 14 shotguns one of which is a cracking 20 bore that I have had many pigeons and rabbits with, personally I could'nt care less if anyone thinks it's a women's gun, it's what I think that matters. dougall
op,why are you 'not fussed by beretta'..obviously each to their own but I do think silver pigeon in 20bore is a cracker(I have a few 20g and this is favourite/best gun).and at your budget you could pick up a 2nd hand eell @ £3k..a cracking gun with sufficient bling if you want that kind of thing..if you are set on a 20 bore at least try a beretta as to my eye I think they are perfect in 20g...it will hold its value forever if you look after it better than anything this side of an english s/s..... robbiep
Though I did post on the first page, I'll post again, having read all the comments since. It's noticeable that all the people (myself included) who use 20 bores absolutely love them. All those who are concerned about the size of their *ahem* ego, seem to hate them, and disparage them. Suffolkngood
Beware.....it's a slippery slope this smaller gauge lark. First its a 20 then before you know it, it'll be a 28 and then a 410. Hope you've got room for another gun cabinet?
Salop Matt
12bore vs 20/16/28/.410 is like the age old air rifle .177 vs .22 debate (with other oddities like: .20, .25 & .30 ) Answer is the same with shotgun and air rifle................. Its where you place the shot that matters ! Myself I love 12bore and 20bore equally. Only down side of 20bore is price of cartridges. I wouldnt hesitate to use a 20bore for anything I already do. The only time I think I wouldnt use a 20 would be for real high hirds shooting 40gram plus 3`s as seen in Dave Carrie`s amazing films of late, how-ever thats never ever going to be a worry or choice for me unless I both win the lottery and shoot a heck of alot better than I do now ! I have a 20bore youth model Mossberg black synthetic pump and I love it for rough shooting especally in real wet mingin weather and roost shooting. The wife has a nice Lincoln Fair 20 bore 30" O/U and if/when she gets bored of it ( She rarely ever uses it) i have my beady little eye on it Sadly our cabinet is full now so unless I either sell something or we move allowing for a bigger cabinet am fully stocked. There are pro's and cons to this argument.. the above sums up the pro's -as did Kyska's initial reply - I too shoot better with a 20 than I do with a 12 - and will eventually get rid of the 12's in favour of 20s. Which brings me to the cons..... Beware.....it's a slippery slope this smaller gauge lark. First its a 20 then before you know it, it'll be a 28 and then a 410. Perhaps I should have worded it better... I'm aware that Beretta, Browning/Miroku are the biggest manufacturers and the guns hold their value, but I'm prepared to look wider than just these for a gun I really like. The silver pig (my O/U is almost identical) is a fantastic gun, but I do like the look of the round bodied Fabarm. Comments noted on needing more cabinet space as the small bore bug bites, hence I have two already Right, decision made and I'm off on a 20 bore internet search... Thanks all
LThompson
Ive just joined the 20 bore club, and absolutely love it. I went shooting with friends the other day and they loved it as well, I get the comments of 'its harder to shoot' 'you'll miss more' 'man up' But ive had more fun with my 20 than my
Salop Matt
28 gram of shot is always 28gram of shot no matter if its delivered by: 10, 12, 20, 28 bore. And the pattern is just down to choking and cartirdge matching. As said before the only down side to any other calibre other than 12 bore is the cost of cartridges. Also unless fetching down geese (None toxic ammo requirements) or real high birds requiring big payloads of 2`s, 3`s & 4`s in 30-50gram, I would speculate that 21-30gram of 5`s or 6`s (when looking at lead) would cater for 90%+ of shooters here in the UK. Also for clays there seems to be a few moving to 21gram and 24gram loads in there 12bores and they dont notice masses of difference kills wise from what I hear and 21/24gram carts are purfect for 20 bores also. The two of the three shoots I am a beater on the top guns both shoot 20bore. Dont listen to this rubish that a 12bore is the only way to go......Cheaper yes, but enjoyment and comfort/fit are most important. Myself if cabinet space and funds allowed I would have a second Browning B525 30" MC in 20bore to match my 12bore.
Guest cookoff013
as for 20bore shell, dont bother reloading unless you really want to. you dont want to get into it if you have to feed your gun that way. i reload a 12, to essentially do what a 20can do. what i cant do is take the weight out of the 12gauge, they`ll always be 9lb / 6lb guns., as for cost, its about a penny more per shot? unless you are regularly shooting fox, boar, geese etc then the 20 will do fine for the majority of uk game birds. as for the nontoxic nonsense, there are now lead density substitutes, they cost, but there really are no limitations.... i go 12 because its convenient. archiebald
I love my 20 bore! It's a kestrel s/s and it's great for a good wander round the fields. It's so light and I seem to get on with it really well. I been using gamebore 24 gm no.6 and they have performed the same as my 12 bore but the lightness and pointability make it my gun of choice. My 12 bore semi is second choice now and probberbly only used it 3 times in the last 6 months. Give one a go I'm sure you will love it. It's made me want a go with a 28 bore now!
