Firing pin catching catching cartridge lip

Noticed a problem on my Beretta Prevail last night, when I load it and close the barrels the firing pin on the bottom barrel just catch the bottom edge of the cartridge. Just enough to mark the brass and remove a tiny amount. Was shooting DTL so had a look in the bins for my carts from earlier and its on all of them I think. Also a small mark on the bottom part of the barrel.

Guessing maybe the pin needs to be ground down a bit to give it some clearance? Anyone else had a problem like this?

Had a similar problem on an old Laurona. The bottom firing pin was staying out too far after firing. This would cause the gun to jam when opening it as the cartridge head was dragged over the extractor. The gun smith found wear on the internals that would normally retract the pins. The repair wasn't cost effective on my old gun (proofed in 1976) but probably something that can be done on yours if that turns out to be the problem.

Hope this helps

usually if a firing pin fails ..it is the front portion of it that snaps off...then it falls out and is gone forever....the pin...."floats" ie: it is only in contact with the hammer (external or internal) for the briefest of moments and is held in position with a coil or leaf spring....if the pin is sliding out of the hole it may well be the retaining spring,... as BRNO22F says a cheap fix...

More than likely that the nut on the end of the spring guide assembly has come loose so that the necessary amount of rebound on the hammer has lessened . Not an uncommon fault . Other than that ,yes it could be the pin is not retuning due to a build up of gunge or and vey unlikely that the gun is late in cocking.

My money and long experience would suggest its a rebound fault .

Local rfd had the stock off while I was there today, all looked ok, pin wasn't rattling around or anything. Guns not very old so still quite clean inside, unfortunately he was busy so couldn't really do much but it's going off to the gunsmith tomorrow to be sorted!

Will let you all know what it was.

No he just took the stock off cos I was pestering him asking what he thought it might be, said he couldn't see anything obvious, but he's an rfd not a gunsmith, that's why they get sent to him!

To be fair I know he does basic repairs but it comes down to time more than anything else for him, with customers keeping coming in and the phone always going he doesn't get time to sit and do a job start to finish, not great when you keep getting interrupted!
