Davyo
We have hired a villa in Binibeca Minorca & fly out on Friday.I couldn't book a car through Thomas Cook as don't use credit cards & the hire companies like Hertz ectt won't accept a debit card.I have had to get taxi transfers from the airport to the villa with returns. Now I only want a car for about 4 days of my stay and heard of a company called Poppy's Cars ( no credit card req) so I emailed them but no reply. So the big question is do I really need a car as the island is only 31mls x10mls ? Has anyone been and found the bus service ok for getting around? Or can anybody recommend a company on the resort where I can just walk in and hire a car for a few days? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated at this late stage. Dave Edited July 22, 2015 by Davyo
OJW
I'm flying out to Minorca to stay in Binibeca for a week in the very early hours of tomorrow morning. We booked a car between 4 friends and it cost £40 each from a company called Sixt. Unfortunately my mate booked it so I can't be of much help but they did seem to think it was worth getting one for beach and supermarket runs ect. Two of them have been to Binibeca many times before. If I see a Pigeon Watch towel on a sun bed I'll come and say Hi! Edited July 22, 2015 by OJW
Chris Bb
We went many years ago and a car then was essential. But, we were in a far from anywhere development with no local shops or beaches. Cars, then, were also at a premium, after about a week's wait we got one.

activeviii
What is it with that place A mate is over there for 2 weeks now as well. When we went we just took taxis as it was cheap. They all charged the same price also the island is so small that bikes worked very well.
happypig
Don't forget to video around the car before and after..... I hired a car on Malta and on my return was told that I was being charged for accident damage.... A scrape that I thought was listed on the schedule..... Goodness knows how many people have been charged for this... No doubt the hire company has a friendly garage able to produce a receipt for the repair..... With the video I was able to prove it was pre existing and have the charge refunded

They usually only take credit cards then skim off 1200 euros to cover any damage claims, it drops back onto your card after a week or so if they dont get you for damage or fuel etc. Video is a must as the car wont be checked in front of you at an airport, you just park it up. Beware!

Don't have a credit card only debit card & the debit card I paid with is an additional card(saving account for my shooting stuff) of which there is only £25 in now lol.(will be going over it with a fine tooth combe when they drop it off at the villa and will be going over it again when them come to collect it. mickyh
I dropped a car off in Italy last month, hired for the Moto GP, I had filled it to the brim on the motorway, but then drove 12 k to the airport. Cost was 2 litres of fuel? Fee for refilling and Tax. Wait for it......... 30 euros, I didn't find out for 3 or 4 days. First time ever but its made me think about using the cheapest hire firms? We had a week out on Menorca last summer and it is small. About 30 miles from one end to the other. How the hell did Thomas Cook charge you £80 for a taxi? Binibeca is only about 3-1/2 miles from the airport. We stayed in Santo Tomas and the taxi was 34 euros for wife & me. There is one main road from Mahon up the other end to Ciudadela. They are the only places of any sort of size, the rest are only like small villages. We could walk from one end of Santo Tomas to the other end in about ten minutes and that is one of the bigger places. Busses are frequent and cheap. The island is quite scrubby with a dark brown soil but it isn’t very picturesque. Both Mahon & Ciudadela were worth a visit for a wander around but that was about it. There were loads of pigeons eating the clover on the hotel lawns every morning. I could have shot a fair bag with a 410. I posted some pictures last year. Have a safe journey and a great time. PS See if you can get out of the car hire you won’t need it.
smig4373
Make sure you go to the gin distillery on the dock side in Mahon..free to enter and as many free samples as you like..serve yourself...about 20 flavoured gins...be aware tho..I had about 15 shots..fresh air sniper hit me straight on the bonce when I left...and there's a lot of steps back to town centre..if you wanna go..find the big yellow glass bottom boat..go left about 500yds..as for car hire..the staff/entertainment ppl in our place said they can get better deals..we were offered 1 for 22euro p/day..we were in arnal D castell,North East of the island...fornells is a nice little harbour side village..we were there on honey moon last year.. fortune
As you've splashed out on a car these wont be any use to you but you never know. http://www.mymenorca.info/menorca/Buses.php http://www.menorca-net.co.uk/menorca/taxi.php There is one main drag from east to west and small roads run off of that to various villages. have a great time. fortune
If you go to Cuitdadela and end up near the cathedral and the town hall area then around the back is an inlet from the sea. It is the town port and it is packed with lots of boats. There is a nice walk down to the mouth of the inlet to the entrance where there is a ships propeller and a big anchor set up. There sure is some monies worth down there parked up. Enjoy the sun because we have had a lot of rain here since you left.
