Finally the grass is cut - foxing time

One of the more productive farms in terms of foxes has drawn a blank the last couple of times as the majority of the ground had fairly high grass. Spoke to the farmer yesterday and they have just mowed it (3rd cut silage) and were starting to clear the field.

Quick trip round another permission with the .17 hmr first and then onto the cut fields (250 acres or so). 15 seconds in and a nice pair of eyes staring back at me. Over to the NV to see a fox at around 150 yards. Quick squeak on the mark one hand caller and she trotted over the field to be met with a Hornady SST 75 grain in the chest at around 60 yards...if only they were all that easy.

Into the next field to see another 2 foxes but couldnt get a shot due to the layout of the field and they headed into the maize. Next field...another fox but no safe shot (may have been one of the 2 I had already seen).

I was surprised to see any foxes as I have shot a fair few at this permission already but I am not complaining.

Over to the other side of the farm to see yet another fox but couldnt get a safe shot so ended up following the little blighter across three fields before it stopped...behind a flippin fence. It finally stopped for a split second at 150 yards in the clear but in a slight dip so the only shot I could take was a head shot. Nice big dog fox.

All in all a good night though I didnt leave until 2.20 a.m (got there at 10.30).

150yds is good way for a mouse gun Mike.

Only kidding. Well done.:-)

You took two rifles with you didn't you! Sorry.

How rude...I was so scared of the persecution from you that I took the great heavy lump of a .243  The foxes are a lot easier to photograph with a .17 hmr round in the head rather then with most of their head missing after the .243 has done its job. Take it easy bud

good work Mike, they look in top condition apart from the obvious, good luck with the others

Cheers mate. A return trip booked for tonight or tomorrow to see if I can catch up with the others.
